The Swedish automaker recently carried out a rigorous battery of evaluations with the prototype of the adventurous version of its electric compact SUV in the Niigata mountains, at Japão. The model, identified as the Cross Country variant of the EX30, faced adverse weather conditions and rough terrain to validate the durability of its components. Durante the journey, the thermometers registered around 3°C, creating an ideal scenario to test the response of electronic and mechanical systems in an environment of intense cold and low grip.

The test vehicle presented clear aesthetic and functional changes compared to the urban version already sold. The engineering team focused on ensuring that the dynamic performance matched the car’s robust proposition, using electric motors on the front and rear axles to ensure immediate traction. Mesmo In sections where the asphalt was covered by snow or ice, the mechanical assembly maintained stability, requiring little intervention from the trajectory correction systems.

Technical specifications and functional design

Visually, the model stands out for its adoption of matte black panels on the front and rear bumpers, as well as on the sides. Esses elements not only serve as aesthetic differentiation, but function as shields against scratches and small impacts typical of unpaved roads. The structure was designed to convey solidity, maintaining the brand’s visual identity while adding an extra layer of protection to the body.

Among the main technical changes implemented for this version, three fundamental points observed during the development phase stand out:

– Suspensão elevated which guarantees an extra 20 mm of height in relation to the ground;

– Sistema permanent all-wheel drive (4WD) recalibrated to maximize grip;

– Placas bottom shields installed on the chassis to shield the batteries from debris.

Performance and adaptation to the terrain

Traction capacity was one of the high points of the evaluation on winding Japanese roads. The torque management system between the wheels allowed the vehicle to maintain composure even on surfaces with a variable coefficient of friction. The software’s intelligence distributes the force of the electric motors instantly, preventing excessive skidding and ensuring that the driver maintains directional control, regardless of the unevenness of the road.

The suspension also received a specific adjustment to deal with the uneven topography. Diferente of the urban version, which prioritizes firmness for asphalt, the adventurous model’s set absorbs imperfections on light trails and dirt roads more efficiently. The balance between comfort and rigidity was maintained, allowing long journeys without transmitting excess vibration to the cabin, while at the same time supporting the body in tighter curves.

Thermal comfort and internal environment

Inside, the driving experience has been preserved with a focus on acoustic and thermal insulation. Mesmo with external temperatures close to zero, the air conditioning system and door seals maintained a welcoming environment, without the need for excessive battery energy consumption. The absence of noise from the combustion engine, combined with the new insulation, reinforced the feeling of refinement typical of the premium segment.

Visibility was also a praised factor, facilitated by the slightly higher driving position and the large glass areas. The minimalist and practical internal layout proved to be functional for everyday use and weekend getaways, offering adequate space for sports equipment. Volvo’s proposal with this model is to combine the sustainability of electrification with the versatility necessary to face challenging climates and terrains safely.
