Back Market has partnered with Google to offer a $3 flash drive that makes it easy to install ChromeOS Flex on older computers. The device hits the market on March 30 as part of a limited pilot program. The initiative seeks to keep laptops and desktops functional for longer, especially those running outdated versions of operating systems.

ChromeOS Flex is an adapted version of the Google operating system designed for varying hardware. Ele transforms old machines into secure and fast options for web-based tasks. Diferente of the default ChromeOS used in Chromebooks, this variant does not include support for Android applications, but maintains the cloud focus, automatic updates, and low resource consumption.

The preloaded flash drive eliminates the need to manually create bootable media. Usuários insert the device into the compatible computer and follow the simple installation process. The approach reduces technical barriers for those unfamiliar with creating a bootable USB.

Partnership aims to reduce electronic waste

The collaboration between Back Market and Google comes at a time when many Windows 10 computers are facing the end of official support. Esses devices remain hardware functional, but miss essential security updates. ChromeOS Flex moves much of the processing and protection to the cloud.

The pilot program initially distributes 3,000 units of the flash drive. Back Market plans to assess demand to decide on future expansions. The symbolic value of US$3 covers production and distribution costs without generating high profits.

Schools, small businesses, buyers and sellers of refurbished equipment form the main target audience. Essas Institutions often need affordable solutions to keep computer fleets operational.

How ChromeOS Flex works on old machines

The operating system runs well on older Windows laptops and on MacBooks with Intel processors before the transition to Apple Silicon. Google maintains an official list of tested compatible models. Instalação on unlisted hardware occurs in most cases, although some features may require adjustment.

Updates occur automatically in the background. The focus on browser and cloud services minimizes the load on limited processors and memories. Usuários access files via Google Drive or store locally on compatible external drives.

ChromeOS Flex prioritizes security with verified boot and process sandboxing. Computadores receive regular patches without manual intervention. Essa feature makes the system suitable for shared environments or with multiple users.

Benefits for users and the environment

Many devices end up discarded due to lack of updated software, even with hardware in good condition. The proposed solution allows for prolonged reuse and reduces the volume of electronic waste. Custos with new equipment falls, especially in scenarios of inflation in components such as RAM and storage.

Educational institutions have an alternative to equipping rooms with refurbished machines. Pequenas companies maintain productivity without high investments in new hardware. The installation process takes minutes in most supported cases.

Release Details and Initial Limitations

Sales start on March 30th exclusively on the Back Market website. The limited quantity is used to test acceptance and logistics. Caso demand exceeds expectations, new shipments enter production.

The flash drive does not include recurring costs or subscriptions. Usuários install the system for free after purchasing the device. Google continues to offer direct download of the ChromeOS Flex image for manual USB creation.

Compatibility and necessary preparation

Before installation, it is recommended to check the compatibility list on the official ChromeOS Flex website. Backup of important files protects data during the process. ChromeOS Flex erases the hard drive when installing, so users must transfer information in advance.

Some peripherals such as printers and webcams work via standard drivers. Configurações with multiple monitors operate in basic mode. Touchscreens respond if the hardware supports common standards.

The system emphasizes cloud storage for greater mobility. Arquivos saved locally remains accessible offline. Formatos as exFAT and FAT32 on external drives have better compatibility.
