Analysis by Stiftung Warentest points out a single Ketchup with a perfect rating in terms of flavor and composition
A comprehensive evaluation carried out by the renowned consumer organization The evaluators focused on a series of criteria, looking for that ideal flavor that combines the fruitiness of ripe tomatoes with a spicy touch, sweet without being cloying, and a refreshing acidity, but never excessively vinegary.
This detailed study was not limited to just taste. Ingredientes, texture, presence of contaminants, packaging design and labeling clarity were also scrutinized to provide a complete picture of the quality of products available on the market. The research concluded that, although one product stood out, none of the ketchups tested achieved the overall rating of “very good”, highlighting the strictness of the analysis standards.
In addition to the champion, eleven other products, representing an affordable price range between €0.26 and €1.33 per 100 ml, were classified as “good”. Esta list included both cheaper supermarket brands and organic options, demonstrating that quality can be found across different price segments.
The only ketchup with top marks
The product that achieved the acclaimed score of 1.0 in the Stiftung Warentest test was the Ketchup of Tomate Born. Este item, sold at a price of €1.99 per 450 ml (or €0.44 per 100 ml), proved to be the ideal choice for evaluators, dominating the flavor aspect with its balanced and authentic composition.
The performance of the Ketchup of Tomate Born stands out in a saturated market, where excellence in all aspects is rare. The attention to detail in its formulation and the balance of flavors were decisive factors for this superior rating, reaffirming that quality can be clearly perceived by the most demanding consumers.
This result highlights the importance of rigorous product testing, which helps guide consumers in their daily choices. Recognition by Stiftung Warentest gives Born ketchup a seal of trust and quality.
Other highlights and affordable options
Among the ketchups that received the “good” rating, there are several alternatives that suit different consumer profiles. Três organic products and three ketchups developed specifically for children were positively evaluated, demonstrating that concern about the origin of ingredients and specific nutritional needs are being considered by manufacturers.
Byodo Kids Ketchup was voted the best in the children’s category, priced at 3.99 euros per 300 ml (1.33 euros per 100 ml), confirming that it is possible to combine flavor and ingredients suitable for younger people. Para those looking for savings without compromising on quality, the options “Edeka Gut & Günstig” and “Lidl
The presence of organic ketchups and those aimed at children among the “good” ones indicates a growing diversification and attention to market demands. Consumidores concerned about healthy eating and sustainability now have more options validated by a reference body.
Products that failed the test and the reasons
Stiftung Warentest’s analysis also identified products performing poorly, with seven ketchups receiving a “satisfactory” rating, three as “sufficient” and one rated as “deficient.” The reasons for these lower scores were varied, ranging from the presence of contaminants to flavor issues.
One of the most worrying points was the detection of potentially harmful toxins in some products. In three cases, the reference values for toxins of the species Alternaria, which can develop in late harvested or poorly stored tomatoes, were exceeded. Stiftung Warentest warns that, although the risk to humans is not yet completely clear, the structure of these toxins is similar to that of mutagenic and carcinogenic substances, recommending caution when consumed.
The presence of these toxins is an indication of the need for greater quality control in the production chain. Problemas in harvesting and storage can compromise food safety, reinforcing the importance of rigorous inspections.
Sugar and sweeteners: a critical look
Reviewers’ initial concerns regarding excessive sugar content in ketchup were mostly unfounded. With the exception of two outliers (26.6 g and 21 g per 100 ml), sugar levels varied between 3.6 g and 19.3 g per 100 ml, with an average of 16 g per 100 ml. Surpreendentemente, one of the ketchups tested managed to achieve a “good” rating without added sugar or sweeteners, benefiting from the natural sugar present in tomatoes (5.6 g per 100 ml).
However, Stiftung Warentest warns about labels such as “With less sugar”. Research has revealed that many of these products use artificial sweeteners, which, despite reducing calories, often compromise flavor. Test participants expressed discomfort with artificial notes or an excess of sweetness, resulting in taste ratings that rarely exceeded the “satisfactory” level.
The organization also maintains a critical stance towards sweeteners, arguing that they do not help to overcome the preference for sweets, and can lead to greater consumption of other sugary foods. Além Additionally, sweeteners such as sucralose, which are difficult to biodegrade, are being discontinued due to their contribution to environmental pollution, as sewage treatment plants are unable to completely remove them from water.
Sustainability in packaging and home production
In an effort to promote more sustainable practices, Stiftung Warentest reviewers recommend purchasing ketchup in glass bottles. Segundo the organization, “tested bottles can be recycled and turned back into glass. Nem all plastic bottles are recyclable,” an important consideration for consumers concerned about the environmental impact of their choices.
For those who wish to completely avoid sugars, sweeteners or artificial flavors, the option of making homemade ketchup appears as a viable and personalized alternative. Centro Federal from Nutrição (BZfE) offers a simple guide to preparing a healthier version:
