Pelo minus ten scientists involved in classified nuclear and aerospace research died or disappeared in Estados Unidos in quick succession. The FBI began a coordinated investigation with Departamento of Energia, Departamento of Defesa and federal law enforcement agencies to determine whether there is a link between the cases. Casa Branca classified the matter as “a very serious issue” and Congresso considered it a possible threat to national security.

Federal Investigação gains strength in Capitólio

The Republican-led Comitê of Supervisão of Câmara announced that it will investigate reports of deaths and disappearances of individuals with access to sensitive scientific information. James Comer, chairman of the committee, told Fox News that “it is highly unlikely that this is a mere coincidence” and that Congresso considers the situation a priority. The committee requested official explanations from the FBI, Departamento of Defesa, Departamento of Energia and NASA about possible interdependencies between the cases.

Casa Branca revealed that it is working with federal agencies to determine if there is any connection between the deaths. NASA published a statement on X (formerly Twitter) stating that it coordinates with relevant agencies. A spokesperson for the space agency stated, “At this time, we do not see any national security threats related to NASA.”

Ceticismo for single sign-on

Nem all legislators agree that the cases are interconnected. Senator Walkinshaw, a Democrat member of the oversight committee, acknowledged the need for an investigation but told CNN he was not convinced of a common motive. Segundo Walkinshaw, Estados Unidos have thousands of scientists in the nuclear field. Ele argued that even if a foreign adversary targeted the American nuclear program, “it’s not a program that can be attacked by 10 people and suffer a major setback.”

Série of deaths started in 2023

The sequence of suspicious incidents began on July 30, 2023, when Michael David Hicks, a 59-year-old scientist who worked on Laboratório from Propulsão to Jato (JPL) at NASA for almost 25 years, passed away. Sociedade Astronômica Americana reported that Hicks had carried out research on comets and asteroids. Sua’s daughter, Julia Hicks, told CNN that her father suffered from a chronic illness and that she could not “imagine any connection between his death and the disappearance of the scientists.”

In 2024, Frank Meyvald, a 61-year-old space research specialist, died in Los Angeles. In June of the same year, Monica Reza, a 60-year-old aerospace engineer and head of the materials processing group, disappeared while walking in a forest. Reza left his belongings and the restarted cell phone was found.

Former Major General’s Desaparecimento Raises Questions

William Neal McCasland, a 68-year-old former major general of Força Aérea, disappeared on February 27 of this year after leaving his home in Albuquerque, Novo México. Seu cell phone, glasses and wearable device were found at his residence. The FBI actively participates in the search for the soldier.

McCasland led aerospace research for Departamento of Defesa and led Laboratório of Pesquisa of Força Aérea in Base Aérea of Wright-Patterson. Rumores suggested link to extraterrestrial debris from the 1947 Roswell incident, a claim denied by Força Aérea. McCasland’s wife, Susan McCasland Wilkerson, posted on Facebook: “No one has reason to take my husband from me” and denied that he possessed “special knowledge about dead bodies or extraterrestrial debris.”

Cientistas of Laboratório of Los Alamos in focus

Dois Scientists who disappeared worked at Laboratório Nacional of Los Alamos, a nuclear research facility at Novo México:

  • Melissa Cassius, 53 years old, last seen in June last year walking on the highway near Tulpa, Novo México
  • Anthony Chavez, 78 years old, construction supervisor who disappeared in May last year

Novo México’s Polícia Estadual reported that Cassius left belongings at home and his cell phone was reset. The state public safety department told CNN that it does not believe there was a crime. Sobre Chavez, Los Alamos police investigator stated that there was no evidence of foul play related to the disappearance.

Dificuldade on establishing common standard

Circumstances differ significantly between cases. Alguns involve confirmed death, others just disappearance. Locations vary between Los Angeles, Novo México and other regions. The ages of those involved range between 53 and 78 years old. Alguns worked in space agencies, others in nuclear research laboratories or military structures. Investigadores in different jurisdictions still assess whether certain deaths constitute crimes or result from natural causes. The lack of clear forensic evidence in several cases complicates the analysis of a possible coordinated criminal pattern. Especialistas warn of the risk of spurious connections when multiple incidents receive simultaneous media attention.
