The Orion capsule touched down at Oceano Pacífico on April 10, completing a historic nearly ten-day journey around Lua. The four astronauts on board — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — disembarked in good health. The test marked the Artemis program’s first crewed flight beyond Terra’s low orbit in more than 50 years, validating critical systems for future trips to the lunar surface.

Equipes recovery from Marinha of Estados Unidos worked at the site, southwest of San Diego, on Califórnia. The mission took off on April 1 from Centro Kennedy, on Flórida, powered by the SLS rocket. Durante flight of nine days, one hour and 32 minutes, the crew tested maneuvers, life support systems and communication at extreme distances, covering a total trajectory of more than 1.1 million kilometers.

Orion validates deep space performance

The Orion capsule maintained stability throughout the mission, with no serious incidents compromising the integrity of the spacecraft. Minor Problemas, such as a failure in a ventilation system, were resolved by the on-orbit team. Data collected during atmospheric reentry showed that the heat shield worked better than in the previous unmanned mission, withstanding high temperatures without compromise.

The astronauts performed observations of the lunar surface at an approach of about 6,500 kilometers and documented unprecedented views of the far side of the satellite. The mission followed a figure-of-eight path that allowed for a controlled return to Terra. Durante flight, the crew performed manual piloting demonstrations and tested emergency procedures in real deep space conditions.

  • Orion maintained stability during the translunar insertion burn.
  • Sistemas navigation and communication functions operated without critical failures.
  • The heat shield withstood high temperatures upon re-entry.
  • The crew successfully performed manual piloting demonstrations.

Recorde away sets new milestone

On the sixth day of the mission, the crew reached 406,771 kilometers of Terra, surpassing the previous record of Apollo 13, of 400,171 kilometers. The mark represents the furthest point ever reached by humans in space. Os astronautas relataram visões claras da Terra e da Lua durante o sobrevoo e capturaram imagens e dados que passam por análise científica.

The total duration of the trip totaled more than 1.1 million kilometers, with the capsule completing the complete round trip, lunar flyby and return cycle in nine days, one hour and 32 minutes. Landing occurred at 5:07 pm Califórnia local time. The experience served to train emergency procedures and collect data on how the human body responds to long periods outside Earth orbit.

Tripulação diverse marks breakthrough in space exploration

Reid Wiseman served as mission commander. Victor Glover became the first black astronaut on a lunar mission. Christina Koch was the first woman to travel to deep space. Jeremy Hansen, from Canadá, joined the team as a mission specialist, reinforcing the international partnership in the Artemis program.

The crew’s diversity generated international attention, with officials from Nasa and Agência Espacial Canadense highlighting the group’s symbolism. The four underwent joint training for years before launch and conducted experiments and equipment tests during the flight. The results will guide preparation for longer and more ambitious missions.

Dados from the mission guides the next steps of the program

Engenheiros of Nasa has begun full analysis of telemetry logs collected during Artemis 2. Early reports indicate that core systems have met or exceeded established expectations. The agency plans to use lessons learned for Artemis 3, which is expected to include the first lunar landing of the new era.

The Orion capsule now heads for detailed inspections on the ground. The crew disembarked the recovery vessel and traveled to Centro Espacial Johnson, on Texas, where they will undergo medical assessments and technical debriefings over the next few weeks. The success of the test reinforces the partnership between Estados Unidos and Canadá in the Artemis program and demonstrates technical capability for operations beyond low Earth orbit.
