A former mixed martial arts fighter lost his life after rescuing four girls from a dangerous current at one of the world’s deepest lakes. Medet Zheenaliev, 30, died on Tuesday while attempting to save the young swimmers at Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. The athlete spotted the girls struggling in the water and immediately jumped in to help. One of the girls had been pulled under by the strong current when Zheenaliev and a friend entered the lake. While all four girls were successfully rescued, the fighter never resurfaced from the depths.
Divers recovered Zheenaliev’s body the following day. Lake Issyk-Kul ranks as the ninth-deepest lake globally, reaching a maximum depth of 2,192 feet. The extreme depth and powerful underwater currents make the lake particularly treacherous for swimmers. Local authorities confirmed the incident occurred during daylight hours when the girls were swimming in an area known for unpredictable water conditions.
Professional fighting career spanned less than one year
Zheenaliev competed in four professional mixed martial arts bouts during his brief career, finishing with an even record of two wins and two losses. His debut came on September 23, 2017, at Fightpro’s Battle for the Belt event in Moscow. The Kyrgyzstan native secured victory over Vladimir Kravchuk using an armbar submission just 2 minutes and 8 seconds into the first round. The impressive finish announced his arrival in professional competition.
Six months later, Zheenaliev returned to action at Battle on Volga 3, where he defeated Shamil Temirkhanov via first-round knockout. The powerful stoppage demonstrated his striking abilities and gave him momentum heading into his next fights. However, his fortunes shifted in subsequent matchups. On April 7, 2018, at the Road to M-1 event, he suffered his first professional defeat when Akhmadkhan Bokov forced him to tap out to a rear-naked choke in the second round.
Final bout ended in doctor stoppage after opening round
Following the submission loss, Zheenaliev took an extended break from competition lasting nearly 17 months. He returned to the cage at GFC 16 to face Makkasharip Zaynukov in what would become his final professional appearance. The bout lasted only one round before ringside physicians stopped the contest, awarding Zaynukov a technical victory. Medical staff determined Zheenaliev could not safely continue after the opening frame.

Lake Issyk-Kul presents significant dangers to swimmers
The body of water where the tragedy occurred sits in northeastern Kyrgyzstan and holds the distinction of being the world’s second-largest alpine lake. Its immense depth creates complex underwater current systems that can pull swimmers down without warning. The lake’s volume exceeds 1,738 cubic kilometers, and its unique geographical position between mountain ranges contributes to unpredictable water movements. Despite its natural beauty and popularity as a tourist destination, the lake has claimed multiple lives over the years due to its treacherous conditions.
Local rescue services emphasize the importance of swimming only in designated safe zones with proper supervision. The currents that caught the four girls on Tuesday represent a constant hazard, particularly during certain times of the year when water movement intensifies. Zheenaliev’s quick response prevented what could have become a far worse tragedy involving multiple young victims.
Friend assisted in rescue operation before losing sight of fighter
Witnesses reported that Zheenaliev acted without hesitation upon seeing the girls in distress. His companion also entered the water to assist with the rescue efforts. Together, they managed to reach all four girls and help them return to safety. The friend last saw Zheenaliev before he disappeared beneath the surface. Emergency response teams arrived within minutes of receiving the alert but could not locate the fighter in the vast expanse of deep water.
The search operation continued through the night using specialized equipment designed to scan the lake’s considerable depths. Recovery divers finally located Zheenaliev’s body on Wednesday morning. His selfless actions ensured that four young lives were spared, though his own family now mourns the loss of a son and former athlete. The local community has expressed grief over the tragedy while recognizing the courage displayed in his final moments. Friends and former training partners remembered him as someone who always put others first, a characteristic that ultimately defined his legacy beyond any sporting achievement.
