Long Island Railroad (LIRR) strike affects 250,000 passengers in NY after wage negotiations fail for third day
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), the busiest passenger rail service from América to Norte, remained at a standstill on Monday, May 18, 2026, with negotiators unable to reach an agreement to end the three-day strike. Milhares of workers crossed their arms on Saturday, May 16, in protest over wages considered insufficient, causing widespread transportation disruption that impacts the routine of millions of New Yorkers. The impasse severely threatens mobility in the city and its eastern suburbs at the start of another work week.
Sindicatos, who represent a significant portion of LIRR employees, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the operator of the service, had yet to reach a consensus in the early morning hours. The shutdown marks the LIRR’s first strike in more than 30 years, raising concerns about traffic and the capacity of alternative transportation systems on Nova York. The last time LIRR workers went on strike was in 1994, according to historical records.
Negociações holds salary adjustments since 2022
The LIRR strike began at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, when five unions, representing approximately 3,500 workers (approximately half of the system’s workforce), walked away from their positions. Esses syndicates include the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the Transportation Communications Union. Workers claim they have not received pay increases since 2022, while negotiations for a new contract with the MTA have been stalled since 2023, impacted by rising costs of living.
Discussions stalled mainly due to disagreements over salaries and health premiums. Antes from the beginning of the strike, both parties tried to avoid interruption of services. Houve a prior agreement for retroactive salary increases of 3% to 3.5% for each of the last three years. However, the crucial sticking point is the increase for the current year. The unions initially requested a 6.5% increase, while the MTA sought to negotiate something close to 3%.
Janno Lieber, CEO of the MTA, told CBS News on Sunday that the union workers involved are already among the “highest paid” of the Estados Unidos. Ele mentioned that the average salary is $136,000, and hundreds of employees earn more than $200,000 annually. Outras authorities claimed that current wage demands could not be met without resulting in fare increases for passengers. Governor Hochul highlighted that workers’ contractual demands could lead to an increase of up to 8% in rates.
Tensão politics rises amid labor dispute
The labor dispute escalated to the political scene, with Nova York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, publicly demanding an agreement. At a press conference on Sunday, Hochul asked negotiators to reach a solution in favor of passengers. Ela described the railroad as “Long Island’s lifeline”, emphasizing that “without it, life as we know it is simply not possible. The bottom line is that no one wins in a strike. Todos are harmed.”
Matt Hollis, national president of one of the unions involved, Transportation Communications Union, declared in the early hours of Monday that the strike would be extended to a third day. Ele criticized the MTA, stating that “we gave the MTA every opportunity to prevent this. Instead, at the start of a busy work week, MTA leadership demonstrated once again that they value neither the traveling public nor the men and women who keep this railroad moving.”
Hochul, who is seeking re-election this year, held Trump management responsible for the strike. In response, former president Donald Trump criticized the governor for assigning blame to him, writing on Truth Social on Saturday that he “never even heard of [the strike] until this morning.” Trump blamed Hochul and suggested the issue would be “easy” for Bruce Blakeman, the Republican running against Hochul in the upcoming gubernatorial election, to resolve. Ele also offered to personally intervene, stating, “If you can’t figure it out, let me know, and I’ll show you how to do things correctly.”
Mais of 250 thousand travelers impacted daily
The effects of the shutdown are directly felt by thousands of people who depend on the LIRR’s daily service. Segundo a 2025 report, the LIRR carried about 82 million passengers last year. The average number of users on weekdays exceeded 250,000, while on Saturdays it was 137,000 and on Sundays, 112,000.
Governor Hochul reiterated at Sunday’s press conference that thousands of people will be directly affected. The obligation to find alternative modes of transport, including the use of private cars, could significantly intensify traffic on the main highways in Nova York. Ela encouraged that, from Monday onwards, regular passengers try to work from home to minimize the impact of the strike on travel.
The MTA announced on its website that it will provide limited shuttle bus service on weekdays. Este service is aimed mainly at essential workers and those who cannot carry out their work activities remotely. The buses will operate during peak hours, with departures towards Manhattan from 4:30 am to 9 am, and towards Long Island from 3 pm to 7 pm. Eles will depart from six specific locations in Long Island to transfer points in Queens. The MTA has recommended that Condado and Nassau riders consider the NICE Bus as an alternative to connect to stops on Queens and access busier subway stations or other transportation hubs. Contudo, the plan does not cover all 126 stations on the LIRR’s 11 lines, leaving many routes complex and challenging.
Federal Intervenção and mediation effort
The regulation of LIRR workers differs from that of other MTA employees in that they are covered by Lei of the Trabalho Ferroviário of 1926. Esta legislation aims to prevent service interruptions by requiring elaborate dispute resolution procedures between carriers and employers. Tais procedures may include reviews by an Conselho of Emergência Presidencial and “cooling-off” periods designed to calm tensions before a shutdown.
National Mediation Board (NMB), a federal agency responsible for governing labor relations at railroads and airlines, released unions involved in LIRR negotiations from mediation in August 2025. Isso meant that LIRR workers would only need to observe a 30-day cooling-off period before they could take “self-help” actions such as a strike.
However, with the unions subsequently requesting the intervention of two emergency councils, the cooling-off period was extended, averting an imminent strike. The second emergency council, which released its report on March 16, extended the cooling-off period for another 60 days. In September, Hochul placed responsibility for the walkout on Trump management, claiming it had “shortened mediation” and increased the likelihood of a strike, calling NMB’s actions “irresponsible.” The governor kept the blame on the administration Sunday, saying the strike could have been avoided if the Trump administration “had not taken the highly unusual step last fall of releasing the unions from mediation.” The NMB convened union and MTA representatives on Sunday in an attempt to revive negotiations. The talks are scheduled to resume on Monday morning.
Desafios on service resumption and continued economic impact
Extending the strike into a third workday poses significant challenges to the MTA and Long Island’s local economy. The absence of train service represents not only a daily inconvenience for passengers, but also an indirect cost for companies and a potential impact on regional productivity. The MTA faces pressure to strike a balance between workers’ wage demands and the need to maintain affordable fares for the public.
Commuters, meanwhile, continue to face uncertainty regarding the duration of the shutdown and the effectiveness of alternative transportation options. The situation highlights the interdependence between the transport infrastructure and the economic vitality of a metropolis like Nova York. Enquanto negotiations continue, the expectation is for an outcome that minimizes losses and reestablishes the full functioning of an essential service for the region.
