Beneficiários of Seguro Social and Renda of Segurança Suplementar (SSI) are expected to receive a significant increase in their monthly payments next year. Segundo estimates Liga from Cidadãos Sênior, a nonprofit group that advocates for the rights of seniors, the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 is expected to reach 3.9%. The index represents a considerable increase compared to the 2.8% increase recorded this year.
The COLA is automatically applied every year to keep up with inflation. The calculation is based on the third quarter results of Índice from Preços to Consumidor to Trabalhadores Assalariados and from Escritório, released by the US government. Cidadãos Sênior’s Liga used data released this month to formulate its projection.
Variação cost of living adjustment history
Nos In recent years, COLA has shown significant fluctuations. The index remained at zero in 2015, reached 8.7% in 2022, and fluctuated between these extremes in other periods. Essa volatility reflects changes in inflation dynamics and economic conditions in the country. Cidadãos Sênior’s Liga warned that high oil prices could further drive up the cost of food and other goods, potentially leading to an even higher COLA in 2027.
Insuficiência of current setting
Apesar predicted a substantial increase, Liga of Cidadãos Sênior issued an important warning in a separate report. The group found that the automatic adjustment does not adequately follow the real inflation faced by beneficiaries:
- The value of benefits fell to just 86.3 cents when compared to 2016 purchasing power
- The loss of purchasing power mainly affects the elderly and people with disabilities
- The COLA, although high in percentage, remains insufficient to cover essential expenses
- Alimentos, medicines and health services were the sectors that put the most pressure on inflation
Números and benefited population
Mais 7.3 million people receive SSI monthly, including many individuals with disabilities. The maximum federal SSI benefit this year is $994 per month for individuals and $1,491 for couples, according to Administração of Seguro Social. Alguns states add extra amounts to federal payments, increasing the final amounts received by beneficiaries.
With a projected increase of 3.9%, a beneficiary receiving the federal maximum of $994 would receive approximately $39 additional monthly. Para couples at the top of the range, the increase would amount to about 58 dollars per month. Embora represent real gains, these increases still face the challenge of fully keeping up with rising healthcare, food and housing expenses.
Official Anúncio expected in October
Seguro Social’s Administração will officially reveal what the COLA for 2027 will be in October. Esse announcement will mark the end of speculation and projections, confirming whether the 3.9% rate estimated by Liga from Cidadãos Sênior will materialize or undergo adjustments. The timing of the official announcement allows beneficiaries to prepare financially for possible changes to their household budgets.
The issue of the cost of living for seniors and people with disabilities remains central to the American public policy debate. Enquanto percentage increases are impressive in the numbers, real purchasing power continues to be the most relevant metric for those who depend on these benefits to survive.
