Scientists map rare earth deposits on a global scale for the first time

Pesquisadores of Universidade of Cambridge have identified a global pattern that reveals where volcanic rocks enriched in rare earth elements are most likely to form. The study combined chemical analysis of around 9,000 rock samples with seismic mapping of the deep interior of Terra, establishing a connection between these mineral concentrations and the oldest geological structures of the continents.

The discovery, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, paves the way to predict new deposits of these essential metals for modern technology. Smartphones, electric vehicles and wind turbines depend on these elements, making exploration more efficient and economically relevant in the context of global energy transition.

Conexão between terrestrial structure and metal concentration

The team, led by Dra. Emilie Bowman of Departamento of Ciências of Terra of Cambridge found that rare earth-rich rocks appear predominantly at the steep edges of regions with thicker, older lithosphere. The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of Terra, which includes the crust and upper part of the mantle.

Rocks enriched in dissolved CO₂ play a fundamental role in this process. Essas unusual rocks were considered geological curiosities until recently, when their economic importance became apparent to technology and renewable energy industries.

The researchers used seismic waves from earthquakes to create cross-sectional images of the lithosphere beneath different continents. Esse mapping worked in a similar way to sonar, revealing variations in the thickness and structure of the Earth’s layers that explain the geographic distribution of the deposits.

The team plans to expand the study to include rocks more than 200 million years old, which contain many of the world’s major mines and rare earth deposits. Gibson acknowledged that going even further back in time will be challenging, but considers this work a fundamental step towards accurately predicting mineral occurrences. The methodology combined multidisciplinary approaches: compilation of extensive geochemical data, integration of advanced seismic technology and comparative analysis of continental structures. Bowman spent years collecting and processing information from igneous rock samples from several continents, creating a robust database to validate hypotheses about mineral distribution.
