The first trailer forThe Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s new film, was released this Wednesday (10). The production, described as a complementary work toThe Social Network(2010), dramatizes the behind-the-scenes of investigative reportingThe Facebook Files, from the Wall Street Journal, and the role of whistleblower Frances Haugen.

The film follows engineer Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, who decides to leak internal Facebook documents revealing the company’s knowledge about damage to the mental health of teenagers, the spread of misinformation and other social impacts. She seeks out reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, to expose the social network’s most closely guarded secrets.

Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg in a defensive tone

In the trailer, there is the first glimpse of Jeremy Strong in the role of Mark Zuckerberg. The actor appears in a court scene, assuming an unrepentant stance and declaring himself an “absolutist of freedom of expression”. Strong has already received early praise for capturing the billionaire’s intensity at a time of increased pressure on Meta.

The cast also includes Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku and other names. Sorkin wrote the script, directed and produced, alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser.

Context and impact of the real story

The film arrives in October 2026, more than 15 years afterThe Social Network, directed by David Fincher with a script by Sorkin himself. While the first film portrayed the creation of Facebook in the 2000s,The Social Reckoningfocuses on developments in 2021, when Haugen delivered documents that exposed how the platform prioritized engagement even though it was aware of negative effects.

This narrative gains current relevance with the constant debates about the regulation of big tech, toxic content and the responsibility of platforms in elections and public health. The Haugen case was one of the milestones that intensified global scrutiny of Meta.

The Social Reckoningis scheduled to be released on October 9, 2026 in the United States, by Columbia Pictures (Sony).
