Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premier League, are left without a head coach. Kieran McKenna announced this Wednesday (10) his departure from the club after five seasons in charge.

The 40-year-old Northern Irish coach has made the decision to step away from football to dedicate more time to his family. The news comes just days after he guided the team back to the elite of English football.

McKenna took over at Ipswich in December 2021, when the club were struggling in League One. In a short time, he transformed the team with an attacking style and consistent results.

Under his leadership, the club won three promotions in four seasons. The most recent came at the end of the 2025/26 season, with runner-up in the Championship and immediate return to the Premier League after a season in the second division.

In 222 games in charge, McKenna recorded 105 wins, 64 draws and 53 defeats. He was named EFL Manager of the Year on more than one occasion and built a successful era at Portman Road.

In an official statement, the coach expressed gratitude and pride for the journey. “It has been a privilege to manage this historic club. Now is the right time for a break and to be closer to family,” said McKenna.

The club regretted his departure, but respected the coach’s personal choice. McKenna dismissed recent speculation linking him with other Premier League teams such as Fulham.

Ipswich management is already starting to plan to find a replacement. The team debuts in the new Premier League season in mid-August and needs stability to remain in the elite.
