Jesús Gallardo

Jesús Gallardo - X

Jesús Gallardo should be the starter on Mexico’s left flank in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 31-year-old defender, from Toluca, completes the defensive line chosen by Javier Aguirre for the duel against South Africa, this Thursday (11), at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City. Kick-off is scheduled for 4pm (Brasília time).

Born on August 15, 1994 in Cárdenas, Tabasco, Jesús Daniel Gallardo Vasconcelos is 1.74m tall and stands out for his speed, precise crossing, defensive intensity and versatility — capable of also playing as a left winger. With more than 120 caps for the Mexican national team, he reaches his third World Cup, being one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Gallardo’s trajectory and experience

Developed by Pumas, Gallardo shone at Monterrey, where he won titles in the Liga MX, Copa MX and CONCACAF Champions League. Since 2024 at Toluca, he has maintained a high level and contributed with goals and assists. In the national team, he participated in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, in addition to winning Gold Cups in 2019, 2023 and 2025. His presence in the debut reinforces his experience on the side, especially in high-pressure games at home.

Mexico enters as favorite in Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic. With the support of more than 87,000 fans at the legendary Azteca, the team needs to get off to a good start in the expanded competition. Gallardo will be fundamental in balancing defense and attack on the left side, helping with the offensive projection against the South Africans.
