Raúl Rangel will defend Mexico’s goal in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 26-year-old goalkeeper, from Guadalajara, is the starter chosen by Javier Aguirre for the duel against South Africa, this Thursday (11), at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City. Kick-off is scheduled for 4pm (Brasília time).
Known as “Tala” Rangel, the archer is experiencing the best moment of his career. At 1.90m tall, he stands out for his confident aerial play, quick reflexes and quality passing with his feet. An absolute starter at Chivas, Rangel has played more than 80 games for the club and 14 matches for the Mexican national team, consolidating himself as Aguirre’s main option for the World Cup at home.
Rangel’s history and moment
Born on February 25, 2000, Raúl Rangel reached the main team in 2024 and has already accumulated consistent call-ups. In recent preparations, he showed confidence in friendlies, including making important saves in pressure situations. Choosing him on his debut signals Aguirre’s planning for a cycle that targets not only 2026, but also the future of the team.
Mexico enters as favorite in Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic. Playing at home, with the support of more than 87 thousand fans at Azteca, the team needs a good debut to alleviate the natural pressure of being one of the host countries of the competition expanded to 48 teams. Rangel will be a key player in keeping the scoreboard clean against South African counterattacks.
