The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Thursday (11) the revocation of a series of air strikes that were scheduled to take place against Iran. Trump declared that the decision was taken after negotiators reached a consensus on the “final points” of a peace plan to end the conflict in the Middle East.

US President revokes attacks and discusses potential peace agreement

In a meeting in the Oval Office, in Washington, the American leader indicated the possibility of a definitive pact with Tehran being signed by the weekend. Trump mentioned that the signing ceremony would “probably” take place in Europe and would be attended by his vice president, JD Vance.

However, moments after Trump’s statement, the Iranian government, through the state agency Fars, denied having approved any agreement. The agency stressed that “no text for the initial memorandum of understanding with the United States has been approved.”

Trump’s initial announcement was made on his social media site, Truth Social, where he only indicated that mediators “and others” had agreed to the terms.

In his post, Trump stated that the “transaction” of negotiations had been completed and that the “date and location” of the signing would be released soon. He also mentioned that the talks were conducted “at the highest level of Iranian leadership.”

“Considering that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been taken to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I, as President of the United States of America, have canceled the strikes and bombings scheduled against Iran for tonight,” Trump said.

The American president’s statement came just minutes before the official start of the 2026 World Cup, with the opening ceremony taking place in Mexico. So far, there is no information that directly links Trump’s statement to the football tournament, despite the USA being one of the hosts, along with Mexico and Canada, and the Iranian team having a guaranteed place in the competition. The convergence between the geopolitical announcement and the global sporting event, with the participation of both nations, generated an unexpected additional focus on the international scene.

Recent history of military escalation in the region

Since Tuesday (9), the United States and Iran had reactivated a series of clashes, even after a previous ceasefire agreement signed by both parties.

The latest escalation of tensions was triggered by the crash of a US military helicopter during a patrol flight in the Strait of Hormuz area. After the incident, Trump accused Iran of being responsible for the attack on the aircraft and promised retaliation.

On the same night, the US carried out bombings against defense systems on Iranian territory and radars located in Hormuz. In response, Iran retaliated with attacks on a US military base in Bahrain. The following day, Wednesday (10), the US carried out a new attack, to which Tehran responded by launching missiles against other countries in the Persian Gulf.
