British driver George Russell, from the Mercedes team, adopts a new stance ahead of the Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix. After a period of frustrating results, Russell decided to remove the pressure for the championship title and focus exclusively on driving guided by his instincts, as revealed in a recent statement. This change in perspective marks a turning point in his approach to the remainder of the season.

Frustration in Monaco and the new mentality

The last race in Monaco left a bitter taste for Russell, whose performance was severely impacted by a controversial pit penalty. He still expresses incomprehension about the infraction, which he considers to have unfairly ruined his weekend. The driver even tried to convince the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to apply the sanction after the race, without success.

However, after a few days to process the situation, the Mercedes athlete opted for a renewed approach. Expressing that the “pressure is gone”, Russell now intends to enjoy every step of the calendar. He prefers not to think about the championship at the moment, admitting that the title race “is very far away” from his immediate reality.

The championship score and what Russell believes he lost

Despite occupying third place in the general classification, with 68 points less than the leader, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Russell refuses to see this disadvantage as a final verdict. The driver believes that the current table does not reflect the true story of his performance during the season. He calculates that, without the incidents of bad luck and mechanical problems, he would have achieved more significant results.

Russell estimates his score could include at least three additional podiums and perhaps even an extra victory. Despite this, he recognizes that he would probably still be behind Antonelli, who has been doing an “incredible” job. For Russell, the general scenario of the competition would be substantially different if these setbacks had not occurred.

The search for intuitive riding and the example of Antonelli

The key to Russell’s rebirth lies in abandoning the obsessive search for answers in every technical detail. After meticulous analysis of the last races, he realized that trying to understand everything in detail ended up harming him. The focus now is to regain trust in your own instincts.

The driver recalls that, in the previous year, he rarely consulted the data, he simply got in the car, drove quickly and was successful. For him, Andrea Kimi Antonelli himself serves as the best example of this theory. Russell notes that his teammate’s riding style hasn’t changed, but “everything is falling into place” for him. The “battle is now against myself,” Russell declares.

Unconditional support and the long journey of the season

In his most challenging moments, George Russell found a strong support system. He has the guidance of his sports psychologist, with whom he has worked for six years, and the ongoing support of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Russell describes his relationship with Wolff as “exceptionally understanding” and “never closer” than now.

Although he reaffirms that he does not want to obsess about fighting for the title, the Briton does not consider the season lost. An encouraging message from Susie Wolff after the Monaco GP helped him put the situation into context. She reminded him that only 27.3% of the season was completed, a figure that Russell needed to verify, joking about his surprise at the still low percentage of the competition.
