The WhatsApp application will now require a minimum version of the operating system to work on iPhones and iPads. From November 30, 2026, the messaging service will require devices to run at least iOS 15.5 or iPadOS 15.5.

This change will affect both WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business, as both applications operate on the same technological architecture. Users who are still using previous versions, such as iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3 or 15.4, will need to update their software before the established deadline.

The good news for many users is that this transition shouldn’t be as impactful as previous support cuts. Any iPhone or iPad capable of installing iOS 15.1 or iPadOS 15.1 can also be updated to iOS 15.5 or later, which minimizes the need to switch devices for most.

In other words, for the majority of users, purchasing a new device will not be a requirement. Simply update to the latest version of the operating system available for the model in question.

Owners of devices such as iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, first generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 should check if they already have the latest compatible update, which is iOS 15.8.8 or iPadOS 15.8.8, installed on their systems.

Reasons behind WhatsApp’s new operating system requirement

The company Meta clarifies that, with the constant evolution of devices and operating systems, WhatsApp carries out periodic reviews of the platforms it supports. Older versions of systems may not have the latest security updates or may lack essential functionality for the application to function properly.

The recommendation is straightforward: access the device’s settings, navigate to “General” and then to “Software Update”, and then install the latest version of iOS or iPadOS that is available.

Those who use WhatsApp for professional purposes, especially through WhatsApp Business, are advised to update in advance. The measure aims to avoid any disruptions to chats, clients, notifications or backups close to the end date of November 30th.
