21-year-old man dies after jumping from a bridge without safety equipment in the interior of São Paulo

A tragic event recorded in the interior of São Paulo gained strong repercussions on digital networks this weekend. Video records captured the exact moment in which a 21-year-old girl fell from a pendulum jumping base in the city of Limeira, during the morning of last Saturday (13). What caught the most attention and generated outrage among Internet users who watched the scene was the total absence of any protection mechanism attached to the victim’s body before the free fall.

The audiovisual material circulating on the internet shows the victim being led by three supposed instructors to the edge of the platform, located on the outskirts of the well-known Skeleton Bridge. Immediately after the girl was propelled into the void, the atmosphere of normality gave way to extreme despair among those present. It is possible to clearly hear in the recordings the moment when a witness screams warning about the lack of the main rope, followed by another voice that echoes the desperate phrase warning the group that the young woman had jumped without the correct fixation.

Preliminary information gathered by the Military Police, based on reports from people who witnessed the fatality, points to a very serious failure on the part of the team responsible for the radical event. The testimonies indicate that the organizers did not connect the mandatory carabiners and safety cables to Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas before authorizing her descent. The abandoned structure from which the fall occurred is approximately 40 meters high, which is equivalent to a building with more than 13 floors, making the impact against the ground absolutely fatal.

Rescue teams from the Fire Department and professionals from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) were rushed to the scene of the incident. Despite the speed in which the vehicles moved, the doctors were only able to confirm Maria Eduarda’s death as soon as they reached the base of the concrete structure. A detail that generated great commotion occurred in the virtual environment: shortly before losing her life, the girl had published a message on her profile jokingly questioning who the insane person had been who convinced her to jump from a bridge, demonstrating natural nervousness before extreme activity.

Police developments and arrest of those responsible for the radical event

The military corporation confirmed that the authorities’ quick action resulted in six individuals linked to the jump operation being taken to the police station, with three of them remaining in custody at the disposal of the courts. During the incident, the police had to deal with attempts to escape the scene. Two of the men who were part of the organizing team tried to escape responsibility by running towards a dense forest area shortly after realizing the seriousness of the situation. To capture the fugitives, security forces needed to activate the Águia helicopter, which flew over the vegetation and managed to locate the pair hiding among the trees.

In the images analyzed by the investigators, the instructors appear wearing uniforms that display the logos of the companies “Entre Cordas” and “Ih Voei”, identified as the promoters of the sporting activity on the bridge. Press outlets attempted to establish contact with the legal representatives of both brands to obtain an official position on the absence of retention equipment. However, until this material was published, none of the companies had returned the messages or calls to present their version of the facts.

The criminal investigation that investigates the circumstances of the case is under the responsibility of the 2nd Police District of Limeira, which is expected to hear more witnesses in the coming days. The episode, however, took on greater administrative dimensions. The local city hall publicly announced that it plans to take the Union to court, alleging that the federal government failed to monitor and block access to the Skeletor Bridge. The site, which is a railway project that has been abandoned for decades, constantly attracts extreme sports enthusiasts without any regulation, which increases the debate about the responsibility of public authorities in areas of imminent risk.
