Barcelona will receive millionaire value from Marc Cucurella negotiation between Chelsea and Real Madrid
Real Madrid announced last Monday the acquisition of 27-year-old player Marc Cucurella, coming from Chelsea, in a transaction estimated at approximately 55 million euros, in addition to performance bonuses. This movement by the Spanish footballer in the transfer market was not only surprising, but will also prove to be advantageous for FC Barcelona’s accounts.
Left-back Marc Cucurella was in Barcelona’s youth system between the ages of 14 and 20, meaning the Catalan club is now entitled to compensation for his youth training rights. As stipulated by the FIFA Solidarity Mechanism, 5% of the total amount of a transfer is shared proportionally between all teams that contributed to the athlete’s development in the period from 12 to 23 years old. For players aged between 12 and 15, the slice corresponds to 0.25% of the negotiation value per year, a percentage that rises to 0.5% annually in the range from 16 to 23 years old.
Based on these guidelines, Barcelona are entitled to a portion of €1.35 million from the Cucurella deal to Real Madrid. This amount is equivalent to 2.5% of the total cost of the athlete’s transfer, estimated at €55 million. If the performance clauses are fully met, the Catalan club will be able to secure a marginally higher income from Cucurella’s move to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
In addition to the benefit to Barça, other clubs will also be financially favored by Cucurella’s transfer to Real Madrid, driven by the FIFA Solidarity Mechanism. Among them are Espanyol, with €275,000, Getafe, who will receive €550,000, and Brighton, who will be entitled to €275,000.
As they await confirmation of the transfer of €1.35 million in training compensation, Barcelona will total €11.15 million in revenue related to Marc Cucurella over the years. The Catalan team, in its history with the athlete, initially sold him to Eibar for €2 million, reacquired him for €4 million and, later, traded him again to Getafe for €11.8 million. In this way, the accumulated net profit of these three operations totaled €9.8 million, a value to which the amount to be received via the FIFA Solidarity Mechanism will be added, demonstrating the strategic importance of talent development and compensation mechanisms in the club’s financial management.
