FIFA demands Egypt remove stars from shirt but keeps four from Uruguay in World Cup
A recent FIFA decision had a direct impact on the Egypt national team, which was forced to remove seven stars from its uniform shortly before its first game in the 2026 World Cup. This imposition raised questions among football fans, especially about the maintenance of the four stars on Uruguay’s shirt, which remains authorized to use them. The rule of football’s highest governing body determines that only officially recognized world titles can be represented by stars on uniforms during the tournament. Recently, the presence of the stars on the Uruguayan shirt was the subject of several jokes and memes on digital platforms.
For the Egyptians, the seven golden emblems symbolized the achievements of the African Cup of Nations. Despite being the team with the most trophies in this continental tournament, the African team had to remove these badges from their official clothing for the World Cup, as they do not represent world-class championships.

The four stars present on the Uruguayan team’s shield commemorate the titles won in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games, in addition to the victories in the 1930 and 1950 World Cups. The controversy arises specifically in relation to the two stars that allude to the Olympic gold medals.
However, the celestial team was not compelled to make the same change as Egypt to its emblem. The reason for this exception lies in the fact that the World Cup competition, as we know it today, had not yet been created when Uruguay achieved its victories in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic championships.
Before the institution of the first World Cup by FIFA itself, the Olympic Games represented the pinnacle of global football. It is for this historical reason that Uruguayans sport two additional stars on their clothing, with the approval of the entity.
In the 2022 edition of the World Cup, FIFA even instructed Puma, the company responsible for the Uruguayan team’s sporting materials during that period, to remove two of the symbols from the uniform. However, this determination was never effectively fulfilled.
Thus, the Uruguay national team continues to proudly display the four stars on its coat of arms. In contrast, Egypt was forced to strip its uniform of the seven stars that celebrated its multiple titles at the African Cup of Nations.
