Manuel Neuer makes two uniform mistakes and escapes FIFA punishment in Germany’s World Cup debut
Germany debuted at the 2026 World Cup with a convincing 7-1 victory over Curaçao in Houston, United States. The result put the team at the top of Group E and marked Manuel Neuer’s return to the national team after almost two years.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper, who had retired from the national team after Euro 2024 and was convinced by Julian Nagelsmann to return, did little work on the field. The German offensive dominated the match from the start, with goals from Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz (twice), Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav. Curaçao scored its first goal in World Cups with Livano Comenencia.
However, the negative highlight for Neuer did not come from the game itself. The Bayern Munich captain wore a uniform that violated at least two FIFA rules (Law 4). He cut the sleeves off a long-sleeved goalkeeper’s shirt to make it short and wore a white T-shirt underneath his turquoise DFB home kit.
Clear FIFA rules on equipment
According to football rules, shirts must have full sleeves (short or long) with no manual changes to the registered design. Additionally, any visible underwear, such as undershirts, must be the same main color as the team shirt sleeve. Neuer should have worn a turquoise green piece underneath, not white.
Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed did not notice any irregularities during the match, and Neuer completed the game normally. So far, there is no information that FIFA will analyze the case further, but the incident could generate greater scrutiny of Germany’s next commitments.
Context of Neuer’s historic comeback
Neuer, world champion in 2014 and one of the greatest goalkeepers in history, had not played for the national team since the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. He overcame a recent calf injury and showed game pace against Curaçao. Nagelsmann trusted him as a starter for this World Cup, prioritizing experience in a long tournament.
The German victory equaled the most elastic score in recent history in World Cup openings and reinforced the team’s good momentum under Nagelsmann. Germany are now preparing to face Ivory Coast next Saturday.
Neuer’s case reminds us that, even in a comfortable victory, technical details such as the uniform can have consequences. FIFA is usually strict with equipment to maintain visual uniformity and avoid unauthorized advertising, but in this case the goalkeeper escaped without immediate punishment.
