Tragedy in ropeless jumping in Cordeirópolis: arrested instructors tell police they didn’t remember to check
Sunday’s edition (14) of the Fantástico program detailed the death of a young woman in an incident during rope jumping in the city of Cordeirópolis, in the interior of São Paulo. The journalistic investigation published parts of the testimonies that were given to the Civil Police by the three individuals who are detained in connection with the incident. In the reports, the accused stated that they did not remember who had the specific task of assembling and checking the safety equipment before the fatal fall.
To contextualize the incident, the type of rope jumping used in the incident differs from the well-known bungee jump. It uses fixed cables, without any stretching capacity, causing a pendulum swing movement after descent. In contrast, the more popular bungee jump employs bungee cords that allow multiple rebounds at the end of the fall. This distinction is crucial to understanding the security dynamics and risks involved in each practice.
The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, aged 21, had her life interrupted when she was thrown from an elevated structure without being properly connected to the protection system. Recordings made by people watching the event captured the moment the girl was lifted and then thrown by those responsible, without any visible connection to the safety cable.
In his testimony before the authorities, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, one of the detainees, reported that the cost charged for each jump was R$180. He also highlighted that the operational group did not adhere to a strict separation of tasks during the execution of the jumps, and the inspection of safety accessories was conducted collectively, raising questions about the clarity of responsibilities.
“On certain occasions, one of us does not install, another checks, another checks, and a third installs. Sometimes, one performs the action, and the other approaches to confirm the correction. It worked that way, approximately”, reported the individual in his statement.
Questioned by those in charge of the investigation about his role in installing the security apparatus or in the final check before Maria Eduarda’s jump, Luis Felipe claimed a complete lack of memory about what happened.
Maicon Fernandes Cintra, another instructor who is also in custody, confirmed his participation in the instrument verification procedures. However, when asked if he had held a specific conference in the student’s case, his response was equally negative, claiming he had no memory of the fact.
The police corporation continues to investigate the incident, treating it as homicide with possible intent, characterized by the assumption of the risk of causing death, even without there being a direct purpose to kill. Of the six individuals involved in the organization and execution of the event, three remain in detention, being precisely those who lifted and threw the student from the elevated structure, which reinforces the focus of the investigation on the direct actions that led to the tragedy.
Defense of the instructors alleges that those involved were in shock
According to statements by Rafael Gomes dos Santos, the legal defender of the three arrested individuals, those represented demonstrate an inability to articulate an explanation for the events, finding themselves in a deep state of emotional distress.
“They are in shock, unable to give an explanation for the incident, especially as they have been practicing this activity for many years and have never witnessed a similar event before,” stated the lawyer.
The Civil Police are also investigating the disappearance of a camera that was supposedly with Maria Eduarda at the time she made the jump. According to the investigation, the electronic device has not been located so far.
Maria Eduarda’s funeral took place this Sunday, the 14th, in the city of Jandira, located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.
