Huawei prepares foldables with an unprecedented format and wide screen for multitasking
Huawei, recognized for its boldness in smartphone design, especially with models such as the Mate XT Ultimate and Pura X that set trends in the global market, is preparing to redefine the flexible device segment. The Chinese company seeks to introduce an unprecedented innovation for a new type of foldable cell phone.
The evidence of this new technological onslaught comes from a patent registration, identified by the PostFast portal in partnership with renowned informant David Kowalski. The document details a flip-style foldable smartphone, which is distinguished by having two folds, a feature that surpasses the current single-fold design.
This innovative project’s main benefit is an expanded screen area, allowing multiple applications to be used simultaneously in multitasking mode. Additionally, the format provides for a constantly visible section of the screen to display alerts and notifications, which potentially eliminates the need for the integration of an external panel, contributing to cost and design optimization.
However, the patent documentation also points to technical challenges for Huawei to overcome. To mitigate signal attenuation when the device is folded, the company needs to incorporate a “shield layer” or baffle. Another requirement is the reinforcement of the portion of the screen that will remain exposed, ensuring durability and resistance against possible impacts or scratches.
Despite these complexities, Huawei highlights in the filing that the concept offers additional advantages. The new device promises to be marginally wider than conventional flip models, providing an expanded viewing experience when fully opened, with ergonomics reminiscent of the popular Huawei Pura X when only one side is closed.
This design also proves particularly suitable for consuming content on far-reaching social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. It would enable users to watch videos and, at the same time, interact with comments or other functions without the displayed media being partially or completely obscured on the screen.
It is essential to highlight that, as this is a patent application, Huawei maintains the prerogative to modify the project or even discontinue it before an eventual launch. However, the discovery reinforces the Chinese giant’s continued commitment to exploring and investing in innovative smartphone designs, boosting the vitality and competitiveness of the mobile phone market.
