Sharp, the Japanese electronics giant, is preparing to enter the competitive smartwatch sector, presenting its first smartwatch to the public on July 9th. The device comes with a different proposal, focusing on advanced health management features, such as the ability to automatically record caloric intake from meals. This initiative marks the company’s late entry into a segment dominated by the American Apple, which holds the largest market share.

Exclusive technology promises accurate calorie calculation

To record calorie consumption, the user will only need to wear the smartwatch on their wrist. A sensor, positioned on the back of the device, monitors changes in body fluids and sugar levels, interpreting this data to calculate caloric intake. This innovative functionality is driven by patented technology developed by Hillby, an American company specializing in biometric data analysis, based in California.

In addition to measuring intake, Sharp’s smart watch also assesses calorie expenditure based on physical activity, such as the number of steps taken, allowing a complete understanding of the user’s daily energy balance. Sharp highlights that, to date, no other smartwatch available on the market offered simultaneous display of calorie intake and expenditure. The estimated launch price for the device is 59,400 yen.

Competitive scenario and the fight for market share

According to a survey by the MM Research Institute, based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Apple is expected to maintain its leadership in the Japanese smartwatch market in fiscal year 2025, taking a 54% share. Chinese companies Huawei and Xiaomi appear soon after, completing the podium. The market, however, faces a period of slowdown, with smartwatch sales expected to reach 3.42 million units in fiscal 2026, representing a 5% drop from the previous year.

Yuuki Nakae, General Manager of Sharp’s Communications Business Division, expressed optimism at a briefing held on June 16. He expressed the conviction that the smartwatch market has not yet reached the maturity of the smartphone sector and that he does not consider the segment to be saturated. Nakae sees vast potential for developing new consumer demands and needs.

The Japanese company also confirmed the launch of its first smart ring on the same date, July 9th. This new gadget will be able to measure important biometric data, such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels. The estimated price for the smart ring is 41,800 yen.
