Chery revealed the name of its new medium pickup truck destined for the international market: Stockman. Presented as a concept at the beginning of the year, the vehicle now has its production version named after a popular contest that received more than 20,000 suggestions. The term “Stockman”, which in English means “person who takes care of livestock on a farm”, refers directly to the agricultural public, which will be the truck’s main target, highlighting the manufacturer’s intention to offer a robust vehicle aligned with the needs of work in the field.
The Chinese automaker said in a statement that the name Stockman was inspired by the “resilience, reliability and hardworking spirit of Australian cattle farmers.” Australia will be the first country to receive the pickup, where the name is already familiar to the public as it was used by Suzuki on an old pickup truck derived from the Jimny. Chery managed to adopt the term without legal impediments, as it was not officially registered.
In the final stage of voting, which had direct public participation, “Stockman” obtained more than 25% of the votes, surpassing other competitors such as Outrider, Orca, Ironbark and Bushwalker. Chery took advantage of the engagement and registered other suggestions sent, including Mankarra, Warlu, Terravon, Pioneer, Vanguard, Altrex, Wayfarer, Trailmaster and even Megalodon, the latter possibly in reference to rival BYD Shark.

With launch scheduled for the end of the year, the Stockman will stand out in the market as the first pickup in the segment to combine a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV) with a diesel engine, a novelty compared to the competition that generally uses gasoline engines. Under the hood, the vehicle will feature a 2.5 turbodiesel engine, optimized to present a 30% reduction in vibration levels compared to other engines in its category.
According to factory data, the powertrain delivers a combined power of 476 hp and a robust torque of 81.5 kgfm. In terms of efficiency, combined consumption is impressive: 50 km/l, a figure that is unattainable for diesel pickups without electrification. Furthermore, the pickup offers a range of 100 km in pure electric mode, in accordance with the NDEC standard.
Chery announced that the Stockman has a load capacity of 1,000 kg and a towing capacity of 3,500 kg. These numbers put the model in line with the most traditional mid-size diesel pickup trucks on the market and outperform most gasoline-powered PHEV pickup trucks. By comparison, the BYD Shark, one of its direct competitors, offers 790 kg payload and 2,500 kg towing capacities, highlighting Stockman’s focus on utility and work performance.
Regarding its dimensions, the Stockman measures 5.45 meters long, 2.01 m wide and 1.89 m high, with a wheelbase of 3.25 m. The height from the ground is 24.7 cm. Its robust structure is based on a spar chassis, and the rear suspension uses leaf springs, features that guarantee durability and the ability to face different terrains.
The pickup’s equipment list includes comfort and technology items such as heated and ventilated front seats, a flat rear floor that expands interior space, wireless cell phone charging, dual-zone air conditioning and a premium sound system. For off-road use, Stockman offers triple locking differential, hill descent control and specific tires for rough terrain.
Following its launch in Australia, Chery plans to expand distribution of the Stockman to markets in Europe and Africa. There is a great expectation that the pickup truck will also be introduced in Brazil, considering the potential and large sales volume that the medium pickup truck segment represents in the country.
