Growing instability marks the relationship between former United States President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni since the Republican indicated his return to the race for the White House. Tensions escalated recently after Trump alleged that the Italian leader had begged for a photograph with him during the G7 summit, held in Évian, France. This statement was vehemently denied by the Prime Minister and resulted in the cancellation of the official visit of the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, to the United States, scheduled for the next few days.

The Italian prime minister spoke out in a video on the social network X, where she categorically stated that the American politician had “completely invented the story.” In her statement, Meloni reinforced that neither she, nor the Italian government, would ever behave in a way that begged for meetings or photo opportunities.

The leader of Italy expressed her astonishment, questioning the US president’s behavior towards allied nations, highlighting that this is not the first time that such an attitude has been manifested.

Meloni added his dissatisfaction with Trump’s lack of vigor in the face of the real adversaries of the West and the United States, noting that, in contrast, he demonstrates a much more conciliatory stance towards these leaders.

Despite the recent controversy, Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump are considered political allies. However, the strain on the relationship between the two leaders has deepened over the last few months, leading up to the most recent controversy.

In recent times, Meloni has distanced himself from some of the White House’s positions, expressing differences, especially in relation to the conflict involving Iran and the criticisms made by Trump against the Pontiff. The Italian Prime Minister even classified the former American president’s comments about the Pope as “unacceptable”.

These disagreements indicate a significant change in the dynamic between the two governments, which was once close. After Trump’s return to power, Meloni was seen as one of the few European figures with free transit and privileged access to the American president, and was even one of the few leaders to participate in his presidential inauguration in Washington. Its activities were aimed at serving as a fundamental link between the United States and the European Union, a role that has become increasingly complex in light of the recent separation, impacting the stability of transatlantic relations and the political balance in Europe.
