Having children can profoundly enrich an individual’s sense of purpose in life, but it is not always reflected in an elevation of everyday joy. A recent study reveals that the experience of parenthood adds a layer of meaning that goes beyond momentary satisfaction.

Global analysis differentiates purpose from satisfaction

Although parenting is commonly seen as one of the greatest sources of contentment in adulthood, new research published in the prestigious journal *Evolutionary Psychology* presents a more detailed perspective. The investigation collected data from more than 5,500 people, distributed across ten different nations, and concluded that being a parent has a limited influence on daily happiness or general satisfaction with life.

Well-being from two different perspectives

Researchers highlight a crucial differentiation between experiential well-being and evaluative well-being. Experiential well-being refers to happiness and positive emotions felt on a daily basis, that is, immediate pleasure.

Evaluative well-being is related to the perception of purpose, meaning and general satisfaction with life in a broader sense. Understanding this distinction is fundamental for fathers and mothers, as social expectations often confuse these two aspects, leading to unrealistic idealizations about parenting.

What Fatherhood and Motherhood Really Offer

The most relevant finding of the study was manifested in the evaluative dimension of well-being. This reinforces the idea that the impact of parenthood transcends the mere feeling of instant contentment.

Raising children, therefore, seems to be more linked to building a perception of greater purpose and contributing to something lasting, even if everyday challenges can, at times, overshadow immediate joy.
