The Obama Presidential Center opened on Thursday (18) on the south side of Chicago. The ceremony brought together four former presidents of the United States, as well as artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Jennifer Hudson and other big names.
Barack Obama and Michelle Obama celebrated their family’s roots in the city and the power of community during the event. The couple was accompanied by their daughters Sasha and Malia. President Donald Trump did not attend.
The site, located in Jackson Park, represents years of planning, construction and legal battles. The 19-acre complex includes a museum, library, educational spaces, playgrounds and gardens. The project was funded by more than $1 billion in private donations.
Former presidents attend dedication ceremony
Joe Biden, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were present at the ceremony. The presence of the four former presidents reinforced the historic nature of the moment.
Artists took to the stage for performances that marked the celebration. The live-streamed event highlighted values such as hope, unity and civic engagement.
Center opens to the public this Friday
Starting this Friday (19), the campus and museum will begin receiving visitors in an open house format, with free programming throughout the weekend. The goal is to transform the space into a public hub for creativity, education and reflection on the Obama legacy.
The project has faced controversy over the years, including questions about costs, deadlines and impacts on the local community. Still, the Obama Foundation presents him as a living monument to the power of choice and collective action.
