Filmmakers and critics had access to “Supergirl”, and expectations indicate that the new phase of the DC Universe, under the direction of James Gunn, remains promising. First impressions of the feature film derived from the comics highlight the performance of actress Milly Alcock and the cinematographic approach that recalls the aesthetics of “Mad Max”.
Journalist Simon Thompson assessed that, although not an immediate classic, the film is engaging and fulfills most of its promises. He highlighted the excellent performance of Milly Alcock as the heroine and the impactful participation of Jason Momoa as Lobo. Intense actions, comedic moments and the quality of the physical production were other points praised by critics.
Germain Lussier, critic for Gizmodo and io9, described the production as “highly enjoyable”. He pointed out that, despite not achieving the same impact as “Superman”, the film acts as a perfect continuation and an ideal complement to the previous narrative, with superior character development and more intricate relationships. Furthermore, the emotional charge of the film intensifies the action sequences even further.
For journalist Mike Ryan, the production is more similar to a “Mad Max” style film, characterized by decadent settings, repulsive antagonists and the figure of a heroine with self-destructive tendencies.
The narrative of “Supergirl” continues the line of the DC Universe, following the success of “Superman”, released last summer, which introduced David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. That film marked the beginning of James Gunn’s franchise, garnering favorable reviews and grossing a global box office of US$618 million. Milly Alcock takes the lead in the new production.
According to the released synopsis, the plot unfolds when a formidable and unpredictable enemy attacks dangerously close to the home of Kara Zor-El, Supergirl. Reluctantly, she forms an alliance with an unexpected partner on a grand intergalactic mission in search of retribution and equity.
The script for “Supergirl” is based on the acclaimed comic book series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, written by Tom King, known for his mature and complex approach to the character. The feature film is directed by Craig Gillespie. The supporting cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts playing the main antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley in the role of Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young woman who seeks Supergirl’s help to hold Krem responsible for her father’s death. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham bring the heroine’s parents to life, and Jason Momoa returns as the enigmatic alien mercenary Lobo. David Corenswet also makes an appearance as Superman.
In a cover interview given to Variety the previous month, Milly Alcock spoke about her choice to play the superhero on the silver screen. She reported her reflection: “I looked at myself in the mirror and asked myself: ‘Who am I to turn down an opportunity like that?’ I felt like it was something I needed to do, precisely because it scared me. And I concluded: ‘I just have a great, surprising life full of possibilities. Why not take the plunge?’ It’s simple: take a risk! Why be paralyzed by fear? Get over it.”
The premiere of “Supergirl” in cinemas is scheduled for July 26th.
