An unprecedented dispute is taking place in the smartphone sector this year, involving giants Samsung and Apple. As Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra prepare for launch, they will face competition from the eagerly awaited foldable iPhone Ultra, and early signs suggest a possible established leader.

Expectations grow around the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

Preliminary information indicates that Samsung plans to introduce two new foldable models soon: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The first should follow a wide-screen design, similar to Apple’s foldable model, while the Ultra presents itself as the direct successor to the previous year’s praised Galaxy Z Fold 7. A recent poll revealed that more than 28% of participants, the largest portion, expressed interest in purchasing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. This preference is not surprising given the reputation of the Fold 7 and the improvements expected for the Fold 8, such as a more compact front camera, a 5,000 mAh battery (in contrast to the Fold 7’s 4,400 mAh) and an even less noticeable screen fold. Confidence in a model that already has a successful previous generation, with improvements focused on key points, often outweighs the bet on a first generation device, which naturally generates uncertainty regarding possible initial technical challenges.

Market preference for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in new research

Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung’s new wide-screen model, won a larger share of votes in the survey than the foldable iPhone itself, with more than 23% of respondents opting for Samsung’s device. Thirdly, around 22% of participants stated that they had no plans to purchase any foldable devices this year. The foldable iPhone, also referred to as the iPhone Ultra in some leaks, only got 17% of purchase intentions. A smaller percentage, more than 9%, indicated a preference for a folding model from another brand.

Apple’s challenge in its debut in the foldable segment

Although foldable smartphones have been on the market for a few years, Apple has shown a considerable delay in this category. The company had the ambition to launch a premium foldable model, with no visible creases on the screen and a highly resistant structure. However, current reports indicate that these two objectives may not have been fully achieved in their prototypes.

If the foldable iPhone Ultra fails to impress consumers from the first interaction, whether through design or functionality, Apple may be forced to reconsider its project. The importance of an impactful debut is crucial for acceptance in an already established market.

Cautionary Advice for New Foldable Buyers

There is an argument that the acquisition of Apple’s foldable model this year should be treated with caution. As it is a first generation product, unforeseen issues may arise. For those looking for a new foldable device during this period, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is presented as a safer alternative. Apparently, this perception is shared by the majority of potential consumers, according to the survey results.
