A collision involving a Honda HR-V and a Toyota Corolla resulted in the first vehicle overturning and catching fire, on Monday morning (22). The incident took place at the intersection of Avenida Rachid Neder and Rua Pedro Celestino, located in the Monte Castelo neighborhood, in Campo Grande.
According to information from Sergeant Cristiano Monteiro, spokesman for the Fire Department, the HR-V was traveling along Avenida Rachid Neder in the Center-neighborhood direction. It was on this route that the vehicle suffered a side impact caused by the Corolla, which was coming the wrong way along Rua Pedro Celestino.
The force of the crash caused the HR-V to tip over, with its wheels facing upwards, and then catch fire. The front of the car was the area most affected by the flames. Fire Department teams worked at the scene, using approximately 200 liters of water to extinguish the fire.
The Toyota Corolla, in turn, spun on the track, coming to a stop in the opposite direction to its initial path, and also recorded damage to its front part. The car’s airbag system activated during the incident.
Both vehicles were driven by their respective drivers. Fortunately, the two women involved in the accident did not suffer physical injuries. They had already left their cars before the arrival of rescue teams and were being assessed at the scene. There was no need for referral to hospitals, as they were only suffering from emotional distress.
Sergeant Cristiano Monteiro clarified that the occurrence of a vehicle fire after a collision is not common, although it is a possibility. He pointed out that such incidents can happen due to fuel leaks or electrical short circuits resulting from the strong impact.
To allow emergency teams to work, Rua Pedro Celestino was partially blocked. The affected section remains closed with the use of cones at the confluence with Avenida Rachid Neder.
