Martin Baturina, who scored one of the goals in Croatia’s first match against England, represents Croatia’s next crop of football talent. At 23 years old, the midfielder lives with the nickname “new Modric”, a label that he himself expresses that he does not appreciate. He follows a similar path to that of the renowned Croatian star, expected to say goodbye to the World Cup in 2026.
Rated as a highly technical midfielder, Baturina is often touted as the likely successor to wear the Croatia number 10 shirt when Modric retires. He followed a similar initial path to that of a player currently at Milan, with both emerging onto the football scene through Dinamo Zagreb, one of the country’s most traditional clubs.
While Modric made his transition to Tottenham in England, Baturina headed to Como, in Italy, a country where, according to the text, he was faced with the challenge of facing his idol on the field. In a statement to his current club’s portal, the 23-year-old player highlighted that, although they have different styles, they share similar characteristics with the current number 10 of the Croatian national team.
“I don’t believe that another Modric will emerge; our styles are different. However, it is likely that I share some of his qualities, which justifies the comparison. We have already played together in the national team and maintain a great friendship”, declared Baturina in a statement to the Italian outlet “Gazzetta dello Sport”. This type of distinction, often expressed by young talents, demonstrates the effort to establish their own identity while honoring the legends that inspire them.
“Luka Modric serves as an inspiration for every Croatian athlete. He embodies not only talent, but also persistence, experience, righteousness and distinction. I consider him one of the greatest footballers of all time, and I feel extremely honored to be able to share the field with him”, expressed Baturina.
Martin Baturina is the son of Mate Baturina, a former player who played for Croatia in the 1990s and had spells in Swiss football. The 23-year-old also has a brother, Roko, who also works professionally, pursuing his career in Denmark.
Baturina’s debut in the Croatian national team came precisely one year and one day after the country secured third place in the 2022 World Cup. Under the management of coach Zlatko Dalic, the midfielder has already accumulated 16 appearances for the national team.
With a record of 22 goals in 165 matches for Dinamo Zagreb, Baturina had his signing made official by Como, where he signed a five-year contract. In his first season for the Italian club, he found the net four times and contributed three assists.
