A possible innovation awaits Apple enthusiasts with the upcoming launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is rumored to feature a significantly more prominent rear camera. This design change would be a reflection of an expanded main camera module, pointing to substantial improvements in the device’s photographic performance. The device is expected to hit the market in the fall.

The Cupertino giant has dedicated increasing efforts to consolidating the Pro line camera system as a truly professional tool. In recent years, continuous evolution has been observed, with the introduction of features such as Center Stage in all iPhone 17 models and the upgrade of the telephoto camera to 48 MP in the Pro versions. This trajectory indicates a clear priority in photography, even if this implies physical changes to the devices.

Bloomberg expert anticipates major technological leap

Information about the camera’s evolution gained strength with statements from Mark Gurman, renowned Bloomberg analyst. He suggested that the next iPhone Pro model could feature “the biggest camera hardware upgrade in the series’ history.” However, expectations were tempered by the initial mention of just one variable aperture function for the main camera, raising doubts about the real magnitude of the improvements.

New clues about iPhone 18 Pro thickness

Recently, new information emerged from Fixed Focus Digital, a well-known leaker with a consistent hit record, who posted details on Weibo. Its sources in Apple’s supply chain confirm that significant improvements are on the way to the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro line. As a direct consequence, the device’s rear structure, made of aluminum alloy, could have its thickness increased by around 2 millimeters.

Main camera module should be more robust

This means that the part of the camera that protrudes out of the smartphone’s body could be even thicker than initial speculation indicated. In a subsequent post, Fixed Focus Digital clarified that the reason for this greater thickness is the inclusion of a “larger main camera module.” The change suggests that Apple is integrating bulkier and more advanced components to boost the device’s photography capabilities.

Possible extra features being evaluated for the camera

While specific details about the new components have not been released, the presence of an expanded module suggests more than just the variable opening. There have been previous mentions about the internal evaluation of a teleconverter, for example. However, this information has not yet received additional confirmation. The bet is on a set of technologies that justify the change in design and the leap in image quality.

Impact on design and user experience

The decision to increase the thickness of the main camera reflects Apple’s commitment to prioritizing photographic performance. While the improvement in image quality is welcome, the larger projection may influence the device’s handling and compatibility with accessories such as covers. This balance between functionality and aesthetics is a constant in the evolution of smartphones, and Apple seems inclined to take a bold step in search of excellence in mobile photography.
