Prince Harry and Meghan express displeasure with new security status granted to Kate Middleton’s sister
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expressed great dissatisfaction after permission was granted to Pippa Middleton, Kate Middleton’s sister, to reinforce security at their Berkshire residence. The Duke of Sussex sees the approval, funded by the British monarchy, as a sign of unequal treatment, especially given his own demand for enhanced protection when visiting the United Kingdom.
The prince has been waging an extensive legal dispute to reestablish his private security scheme. In 2020, when he renounced his royal obligations and moved to the United States, he lost his automatic right to this protection. Currently, British authorities are individually analyzing the need for heightened security during the prince’s visits to the United Kingdom.
This security issue is the primary reason why Harry has avoided bringing his children, Archie and Lilibet, to the country, keeping them away from the rest of the royal family. Meanwhile, Pippa and her spouse, James Matthews, have gotten approval to increase surveillance at their $22.5 million property.
“Over the past five years, Harry has argued that changes to his security protocol, implemented after his departure from royal duties, made him, Meghan and their children susceptible to risks during trips to the UK,” said an inside source. “Due to this history, any recent information about the safety of other personalities linked to royalty naturally generates great interest among their supporters.”
However, dissatisfaction with the recent decision is not restricted to the prince’s supporters, even if the cases involve different departments. Harry and his closest collaborators also see supposed preferential treatment, which causes deep discontent.
“Individuals close to the Sussexes are closely watching decisions authorizing other prominent figures linked to the royal family to reinforce the security of their homes,” the insider continued. “They question why Harry’s requests for his own safety have met with so much opposition, believing this reinforces the perception that his concerns have never been treated seriously enough, especially given his global visibility.”
However, active members of royalty and the British government argue that the situations cannot be compared. “The official position holds that Harry’s issue concerns publicly funded police protection, defined by specialist security committees,” the source concluded. “Private security measures in homes, as in the case of Pippa Middleton, are subject to completely different regulations, processes and criteria, without involving state funds or security committees in the same way.”
