The next generation of the iPhone 18 may be equipped with a minimum of 12 GB of RAM in all its models, according to a recent investigation by the DigiTimes portal. This increase would represent an increase of 4 GB compared to the 8 GB present on base iPhone 17 devices.

According to information released by the website, Apple had requested a significant increase in the production of LPDDR5X chips, essential components for RAM memory, specifically for the iPhone 18. The increased volume of orders suggests an improvement in the technical specifications of the new devices.

Although the increase in RAM memory generally optimizes the overall performance of a device, the main motivation behind the 12 GB for the base iPhone 18 would be to ensure the robust performance of the Siri AI assistant. This level of memory would be considered essential for all the resources of the new artificial intelligence to operate fully in the most basic models. The need for 12 GB of RAM for Siri AI on base iPhones is reinforced by existing hardware requirements for advanced assistant features on other Apple products; Currently, Siri’s expressive voices and advanced transcription are only available on iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, as well as iPads with an M4 chip or Macs with 12 GB of memory.

Back in April of this year, there was already speculation about the inclusion of 12 GB of RAM in the base models of the iPhone 18. At that time, Siri AI was still a rumor in development, but it was already anticipated that its features would require more powerful specifications, even in the entry-level smartphones in the range.

Possible design change for Dynamic Island

One of the most distinctive aspects of Siri AI is its visual interface at the top of the screen, which expands from the Dynamic Island to signal that the assistant is active and listening to the user.

Currently, Dynamic Island has a pill shape, and Siri completely covers it when it is activated. However, this presentation may change. If the iPhone 18 adopts a smaller front cutout, as predicted, artificial intelligence could manifest itself with a rounded look. Informant Michal Langmajer, through his X account (@MichalLangmajer), has already demonstrated a possible visual representation of this change.

This adaptation, although subtle, would be consistent with the assistant’s aesthetic. Additionally, a reduced-sized notch would provide more usable space for displaying content on the screen, even though it still represents a more prominent cutout than a simple hole for the front camera.

Expectations that Dynamic Island will be scaled back have been circulating for months. Rumors indicate that this innovation will reach the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models, in which part of the Face ID components would be relocated under the screen, resulting in a cutout around 35% smaller compared to that present in the iPhone 17 Pro.

The iPhone 17 models are currently available for purchase on the market, with the following options and prices:

  • Apple iPhone 17 smartphone, 256GB for R$ 5,951.00
  • Apple iPhone 17e smartphone, 256GB for R$4,499.10
  • Apple iPhone 17 Pro smartphone, 256GB for R$ 9,134.10
  • Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max smartphone, 256GB for R$ 10,169.10
