The Brazilian team ensures its presence in the knockout phase of the World Cup, even if it suffers a defeat by just one goal difference against Scotland. The match is scheduled for tonight, at 7pm (Brasília time).

In a situation of defeat against Scotland by a minimum score and a victory for Morocco over Haiti, Brazil would finish the first phase in third place in their bracket. With this result, the team would gain four points and reach a goal difference of +2.

The Canarian team, in this scenario, would guarantee its place as one of the eight best teams in third place. The classification would be guaranteed, surpassing the third places in groups D, I, J and L, without depending on other results.

In Group D, Paraguay and Australia face each other in a direct duel. If the match ends in a draw, Paraguay would finish the group stage in third place with four points, identical to Brazil’s, but with a negative goal difference of -2.

The situation in group J mirrors that of Group D. Austria and Algeria, both with three points, compete in a direct confrontation. Even if a draw occurs, the Algerians, currently in third, would be at a disadvantage in the ranking of third placed in relation to Brazil, as they have a balance of -2.

In Group I, Senegal and Iraq have not scored points so far, with France and Norway already assured of their place in the top positions. Thus, regardless of the winner between the Senegalese and Iraqis, none of them would be able to reach Brazil’s four-point mark.

Group L has a greater number of teams that can compete for third place. England, Ghana and Croatia have a chance of finishing the group stage with four points in third place. However, none of these teams would surpass Brazil’s goal difference if the team loses by just one goal.

This projection was prepared considering the current scenario, before the start of the third round. It is important to highlight that the scenario may change even before Brazil enters the field, as the Group B matches, scheduled for 4pm (Brasília time), may impact the ranking of third-placed teams.

New rules for tiebreakers at the World Cup

In the 2026 World Cup, direct confrontation was established as the main tiebreaker criterion. This change represents one of the changes implemented by FIFA for this edition of the tournament, unlike previous world cups, in which goal difference was the decisive factor.
