The Brazilian team’s recent 3-0 victory over Scotland, crucial for qualifying for the next stage of the World Cup, brought a significant personal milestone for defender Marquinhos. With the result, the defender is now part of the select group of athletes who most represented Brazil in official matches, an achievement that elevates his leadership role at a decisive moment in the tournament.

The captain of the national team accumulated 108 appearances for the Seleção, surpassing Lúcio’s mark. With that number, he now equals Taffarel, the legendary 1994 World Cup-winning goalkeeper who is currently part of Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff.

Still ahead of Marquinhos, there are eight athletes who wrote important chapters in the history of the green and yellow shirt. Among them, Thiago Silva stands out, who was his defender partner for many years both in the Seleção and at Paris Saint-Germain, playing 113 games.

The players with the most appearances for the Brazilian team in history

  • Cafu – 150
  • Roberto Carlos – 132
  • Neymar Jr. – 128
  • Daniel Alves – 127
  • Rivellino – 120
  • Pele – 113
  • Thiago Silva – 113
  • Djalma Santos – 113
  • Taffarel – 108
  • Marquinhos – 108

Marquinhos is about to surpass Taffarel’s mark next Monday, the 29th, when the Brazilian team will take the field for the first knockout phase of the World Cup. Although the opponent has not yet been defined, the decisive clash will be held in the city of Houston.

Alisson reaches historic mark among Seleção goalkeepers in World Cups

Another athlete who celebrated an important feat at Hard Rock Stadium was goalkeeper Alisson. He reached the mark of 12 matches played for the Brazilian team in World Cups, a remarkable feat that only four other goalkeepers had achieved before him.

In this select group, Taffarel occupies the absolute leadership, with 18 appearances in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups. Next, tied with 14 games, are Gilmar, present in the 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups, and Emerson Leão, who participated in the 1974 and 1978 editions.

Currently, Alisson is equal to Julio Cesar, starting goalkeeper in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. The current number 1 of the Seleção has the possibility of moving up even further in this historic ranking as Brazil progresses in the knockout stages of the tournament.
