The clash between Norway and France stands out as one of the most talent-rich duels in the group stage of the World Cup. The estimated combined market value of the squads, according to Transfermarkt, exceeds that of any other match at this stage of the tournament. However, the main focus at Boston Stadium will fall on two players: Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, both already among the leaders in the race for the World Cup’s Golden Boot, with two goals in each of their first two games.
Although they are attackers with different characteristics, the two players display similar production. Haaland, the Norwegian, is a specialist in the penalty area, with a unique ability to find decisive spaces where there apparently are none. Mbappé, the Frenchman, prefers to play on the flanks, showing more ease when dribbling and completing in just two games the same number of sprints that the Manchester City star makes in an entire season. Despite these differences in style, their performance in the top five European leagues has been practically identical since Haaland’s debut for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020.
Their key stats reveal a surprising similarity. Mbappé participated in one more match in the championship and was on the field for just 11 additional minutes. Haaland stands out in the number of goals, with two more, while Mbappé has an advantage of five assists. When adding goals and assists, known as goal contributions, only Harry Kane surpasses both, although the English striker has accumulated more than 1,700 additional minutes of play.
In the Champions League, the distance between Haaland and Mbappé is a little greater. Each player’s playing time in the competition varies more, in part because the French striker played for teams expected to compete for the continental title early in his career.
Even so, Haaland is the only one of the two to have won a competition winner’s medal, and the data suggests a possible reason. The pair have similar rates of combined goals and assists per 90 minutes in the Champions League since Haaland’s debut, however, Mbappé demonstrates less effectiveness in the knockout stages.
The performances of both in national team football will be crucial for this Friday’s game. The difference in goals scored by their countries is minimal, just one goal. However, a more relevant distinction is that Mbappé has played almost twice as many international matches as Haaland, having opened his goal tally for France three years earlier.
With a stronger squad of teammates around him, Mbappé appears to have a greater likelihood of winning laurels at the Boston Stadium. Still, it is likely that Haaland will end his career with a higher number of goals in international games.
