A citizen of Brasília, Vanessa Zacarias da Silva, aged 44, was identified among the victims of the earthquakes that devastated Venezuela. Confirmation of the model’s death was given by her brother.
Last Wednesday (24), the northern region of Venezuela, where the capital Caracas is located, was hit by a sequence of two strong earthquakes. The tremors caused a large number of deaths, resulted in the collapse of buildings and left a scene of widespread devastation in the metropolis and its surroundings. This seismic event represented the most intense recorded in the country in more than a century, highlighting the severity of the tragedy.
According to her brother’s reports, the Brazilian woman had been living in La Guaira, a coastal city located approximately 25 kilometers from Caracas, for around two months. She lived with her boyfriend, who is Venezuelan. The model was born in Brasília and, before going to Venezuela, lived in the Gama region, in the Federal District.
“I’m looking for more information through contacts in Venezuela,” said Thiago Nogueira, the victim’s brother. He added that he received news that the connection between Caracas and La Guaira is being reestablished, allowing more aid to arrive by land.
Vanessa’s brother also reported that her boyfriend, like other members of his Venezuelan family, remains hospitalized.
Itamaraty is being contacted to check whether Vanessa is on the list of deceased Brazilians already confirmed by the ministry. On Wednesday, the federal government had announced the deaths of two Brazilian citizens, a man and a woman, whose identities were not disclosed.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) expressed deep regret over the death of a Brazilian citizen and a Brazilian citizen due to the earthquakes in Venezuela. The agency stated that it is offering all necessary consular assistance to the affected families.
The Venezuelan government released a new report on the victims of the earthquakes on Thursday (25), bringing the total number of deaths to 589 people. Furthermore, the most recent survey indicates that 2,980 individuals were injured as a result of the earthquakes.
