Internal crisis in Uruguay explodes: athletes question Bielsa’s methods on the eve of clash with Spain
Significant tension has erupted behind the scenes for the Uruguayan national team, just days away from the crucial clash against Spain in Group H of the World Cup. Reports indicate that a group of athletes, including Federico Valverde, from Real Madrid, and goalkeeper Rochet, from Internacional, expressed deep dissatisfaction with coach Marcelo Bielsa. They would have demanded a review of work methodologies and the strategy for the decisive match.
The demonstration of discontent also included the participation of Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur. Sources close to the situation revealed that the athletes had requested a direct meeting with Bielsa, a coach recognized for his highly demanding work methodology. During the meeting, they expressed concern about the intense volume of training, identified as a cause of injuries in the preparation phase, a characteristic often associated with Bielsa’s methods, which seeks maximum physical and tactical performance from his teams.
In addition to complaints about the physical load, the athletes would have requested changes to the rehearsals and proposed a different tactical approach for the clash against Spain, defending a “low block” scheme and the exploration of quick counterattacks. In response to the demands, the Argentine commander would have called a new meeting, this time with the entire squad, to present his vision of the game mirrored to the opponent.
Coach Marcelo Bielsa took the floor at the subsequent meeting, dedicating 48 minutes to detailing the multiple aspects and fundamentals of his work methodology. During his explanation, he would have mentioned previous attempts by players to remove him, specifically citing the non-call-up of Luis Suárez and the absence of midfielder Nahitan Nández from the list for the World Cup.
As reported, the Argentine coach also claimed to have been a fundamental player in building the careers of several players in the national team, mentioning names such as Cáceres and Maxi Araújo. The statement provoked an immediate reaction from some athletes, who left the room. Defender Jose Maria Gimenez tried to mediate the conflict, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
One of the directors of the Uruguayan Football Association, aware of the troubled relationship between the squad and the technical command, reportedly confided that the coach’s stay at the head of the team has a deadline. According to the report, Bielsa would not remain in the role for more than a month.
The matter was not publicly addressed during the press conference held by Marcelo Bielsa and striker Rodrigo Aguirre on the eve of the clash with Spain. So far, the players involved, the coach and the Uruguayan Football Association have chosen not to issue official statements about what happened.
After unsatisfactory results in the draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, the Uruguayan team faces an all-or-nothing situation. To secure their place in the second phase of the World Cup, the team needs an imperative victory in the final round of Group H.
