Trevor Nelson will step away from BBC shows and radio due to health issues
DJ and presenter Trevor Nelson, a well-known BBC figure, announced that he will take a “short break” from his professional activities due to health concerns.
The Radio 2 and 1Xtra broadcaster, who was already off the air this week after undergoing tests, chose not to provide details about his diagnosis, but assured his Instagram followers that he is now “focused on getting better”.
At the beginning of this year, Nelson, aged 62, celebrated three decades of dedication to the BBC, a period in which he stood out for his fundamental role in promoting black music in the United Kingdom, consolidating a legacy of cultural and artistic influence.
Lorna Clarke, director of music at the BBC, expressed her support, saying: “The whole team at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra wish Trevor a very speedy recovery, and we all look forward to him returning to his programs when he is ready.”
Nelson, celebrated for his passion for R&B, soul and hip-hop, shared: “I wanted to inform my followers, radio listeners and all my ‘Soul Nation party-people’ that I will be taking a short break from my work commitments.”
He added: “Some of you may have already noticed my absence from my daily Radio 2 show this week.”
The presenter went on to explain: “After a routine check-up, I was advised to have some follow-up tests. As a result, I will need more time off work. As you can imagine, in health matters, it is crucial to deal with facts and not speculate.”
Nelson concluded his communication by stating: “So, I’m focused on recovering, getting back to being 100% me and returning to the microphone and the decks.”
Earlier this week, Nelson was honored with a special award at the Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) Awards, significant recognition for his vast career in radio and television.
Many messages of love and support from music stars including Stormzy, Spice Girls’ Mel B, Beverley Knight, Jools Holland and Alesha Dixon flooded social media.
“Health. First and always”, said singer Knight.
Another artist, Lemar, sent his message: “Lots of love, Trev. Rest easy.” While singer and presenter Fleur East wrote: “Take it easy. Health is everything.”
“Congratulations on listening to your body,” singer Corinne Bailey Rae added.
Other communicators, such as Clara Amfo, Tony Blackburn, Romesh Ranganathan, Zoe Ball and Lauren Laverne, also expressed their support.
Laverne, from Radio 6 Music and Radio 4, commented: “Sending you lots of love and rooting for you. I know what it feels like – take it one step at a time and try not to get ahead of yourself.”
Vernon Kay, on his Friday show, paid tribute, saying: “Everyone at BBC Radio 2, including the mid-morning show, is sending Trevor their best wishes, we love him so much. He’s a broadcasting stalwart in the UK – I played golf with him a few weeks ago and he was in good spirits. And I know this challenge is something Trevor will face head on. So Trevor, we’re sending all our love and we hope to see you on the links soon, my friend.”
Currently, Nelson runs a program from Monday to Friday afternoons on Radio 2 and is present on 1Xtra every Sunday morning. The BBC is expected to announce next Monday who will replace him during his period of absence.
