Magnitude 6 earthquake shakes the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and causes panic in Pakistan with dozens injured
A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6, shook the Hindu Kush region, in Afghanistan, this Saturday morning. The tremors were significantly felt in the capital Kabul and extended to neighboring Pakistan, where injuries and extensive structural damage were reported.
Afghan authorities, through the National Disaster Management Authority, immediately began checks to assess the extent of the impacts, although there were no initial and official reports of casualties or damage in the nation. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported that the earthquake had a depth of 100 kilometers.
Impact on Pakistan with injuries and reports of damaged homes
Pakistan strongly felt the impact of the main earthquake, after a 5.4 magnitude tremor hit the country earlier the same day, according to EMSC data. The most serious consequences were observed in different locations, causing concern among the population.
More than 20 people were injured and dozens of homes were damaged in the Musakhail region of Pakistan. Abdul Razzaq Khajak, deputy district commissioner, confirmed the information to Reuters, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.
In Balochistan province, disaster management teams reported around 125 damaged homes, intensifying relief efforts. Emergency kits, which included tents, food, solar panels and blankets, were quickly dispatched to affected areas.
Residents of the Swat district, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in northern Pakistan, reported moments of great panic. Daniyal Ahmad, a local resident, described to Reuters the despair of families who ran from their homes, with women and children visibly shaken and crying. “It was a huge thing here in Swat and it lasted a long time,” Ahmad said.

The Pakistani government acted promptly in the face of the emergency situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his regret over the damage and ordered a rapid and coordinated response from authorities to provide assistance to affected communities.
His office reported that rescue and support teams were mobilized to the most affected regions, with the aim of minimizing suffering and starting recovery. The priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of residents by providing essential resources.
