SEGA clarified doubts about the transition of Sonic Frontiers to the Nintendo Switch 2. The company announced that players with the original version of the game on Switch will need to purchase the Definitive Edition separately to enjoy the title on the new console, with no free or paid upgrade option. This news came to light after the official launch of the enhanced edition for Nintendo’s latest platform, confirming what many fans feared.
This measure establishes a notable distinction compared to other recent releases from the developer itself, such as Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which allowed users a direct upgrade path from the first Switch. For Sonic Frontiers fans, therefore, purchasing the edition for the Switch 2 will be a completely new purchase, moving away from the precedent of reduced cost or free generation transitions that SEGA has already applied to other titles.
Additionally, the company warned that not all additional content will be transferred with the progress files. Certain DLC elements, which were linked to the initial version of the game, may not be accessible after the migration to the new definitive edition on Switch 2, which could impact the experience of those who invested in expansions.
