The music universe mourns the loss of Victor Willis, the main voice and one of the founders of the legendary group Village People, who left us last Tuesday (30). The artist, who was 74 years old, was a key player in the world disco music scene.

The news about his death was first released by his family, through a message posted on the singer’s official page on social media platforms.

According to the family’s statement, Willis died after an illness described as “short but aggressive.” The specific cause of his death, however, was not publicly detailed.

The message released by the family expressed deep sadness: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People. Victor passed away on Monday, June 30, 2026 from a short but aggressive illness. The family requests privacy at this time of great loss.”

The musical trajectory of Victor Willis and the legacy of the Village People

Victor Willis is recognized as one of the pillars in the founding of the Village People and as the lead vocalist of the original lineup, which became a global disco music phenomenon in the late 1970s.

His figure on stage was iconic, immortalized by his portrayal of the police character. Despite this, he also appeared in several performances wearing the classic sailor costume.

In addition to his outstanding vocal performance, Willis was the mastermind behind the composition of many of the band’s biggest hits. Alongside producer Jacques Morali, he co-created anthems like “Y.M.C.A.”, “Macho Man”, “In the Navy” and “Go West”. These songs not only catapulted the Village People to stardom as one of the most influential names in pop music at the time, but also, in the case of “Y.M.C.A.”, transcended the boundaries of genre and decade, consolidating itself as a global cultural phenomenon that continued to be reinterpreted and referenced in diverse contexts, including the political.

His journey with the group had some interruptions: Willis left in 1979, had a brief return in 1984 and left again the following year.

In subsequent decades, he was involved in a series of lawsuits to claim copyright to the songs he helped create. In 2017, after years of legal battles, he officially resumed his post at Village People.

In more recent years, the song “Y.M.C.A.” gained renewed attention when it was incorporated as a soundtrack at Donald Trump rallies during the 2024 presidential campaign in the United States.

Victor Willis, together with the Village People, participated in an event in January 2025, held on the eve of the inauguration of the American president, marking one of his last public appearances with the band.
