Whindersson Nunes and Luísa Sonza, comedian and singer, led a new chapter of tensions on the internet this Monday (6). A joke made by Whindersson involving Luísa and the player Erling Haaland generated great negative repercussions. This incident resulted in the artist unfollowing her ex-husband on digital platforms, signaling a final virtual breakup.
The origin of friction: Haaland and the reference to the song “Penhasco”
The controversy began last Sunday (5), shortly after the Norwegian team eliminated Brazil from the World Cup, with decisive goals from Haaland. Previously, Luísa Sonza participated in a marketing campaign for a delivery service, exploring comparisons on the internet between her image and that of the attacker.
Continuing this coincidence, Whindersson used his account on X (formerly Twitter) to post the phrase “I would throw you off the cliff again”, accompanied by an image of the Norwegian player. This statement makes a clear reference to the 2021 track “Penhasco”, in which Luísa expresses the pain and feeling of helplessness experienced after the end of her marriage with the comedian, once again sparking the discussion about the public impact of her experience.
Luísa Sonza reacts with unfollow and incisive criticism
Luísa Sonza’s response was almost instantaneous. This morning (Monday), internet users noticed that the singer removed Whindersson from her list of Instagram followers. Soon after, she shared a photo at the gym with a caption that many interpreted as a direct message to the comedian, stating that the training was to develop discipline and character, aiming to avoid becoming “a mediocre man who thinks he’s the best”.
Amid a wave of disapproval, Whindersson removed the post and recorded a series of videos on his Instagram stories to present his defense. He argued that he was “freaking out”, and that netizens often interpret his posts as “angry”.
“I created a joke because Haaland scored the goal that eliminated Brazil, and before the match I saw a commercial by Luísa that replicated the meme… So I said ‘I would throw it off the cliff’, since she mentions that I threw her off the cliff. But she got angry”, explained the comedian, expressing regret at the intensity of the digital attacks she received.
Whindersson and Luísa’s relationship and careers
The story of Whindersson Nunes and Luísa Sonza began in 2016, a period in which he was already a prominent figure on Brazilian YouTube and she was taking her initial steps into pop music, recording covers online. The couple made their union official in a grand ceremony, held in February 2018 in the state of Alagoas.
Throughout the period in which they were together, their professional trajectories reached great prominence. Whindersson performed in large arenas with her stand-up shows, while Luísa signed a contract with an important record label, releasing hits that established her as one of the main voices of pop and funk on the national scene.
At that time, their union was considered one of the most followed and admired on the Brazilian internet. They frequently appeared together in videos, interviews and appearances in advertising campaigns, making marriage one of the topics of greatest interest to the public.
Divorce and the intense wave of virtual attacks
In April 2020, the couple announced the end of their marriage in a way that seemed friendly. However, this separation triggered one of the largest and most aggressive waves of online harassment in the recent history of the Brazilian internet, with Luísa Sonza as the main target, driven by unfounded rumors of infidelity at the time.
Months later, Luísa made her relationship with Vitão public. A significant portion of online users began to accuse the singer, without any evidence, of having been unfaithful to Whindersson during their marriage. The artist was then subjected to a brutal campaign of attacks, insults and threats.
For a prolonged period, Whindersson chose not to comment on the topic. Only in May 2021 did he publicly declare that Luísa had never cheated on him, in an attempt to put an end to the speculation. Despite this, the series of online attacks against the singer persisted for a considerable period.
The song “Penhasco” became a post-breakup anthem
In 2022, Luísa released “Penhasco”, a track recognized as one of the most intimate of her artistic career. The lyrics address themes such as abandonment, guilt, emptiness and the deep pain generated by the end of a marriage. Thus, a vast majority of internet users interpreted Whindersson’s joke last Sunday as a rescue of an extremely sensitive memory for the singer, explaining the avalanche of criticism directed at her comment.
Was there a rapprochement between the artists?
In the years that followed, the relationship between the two went through different phases. After a long period of separation, Whindersson and Luísa indicated that the relationship had become more cordial. In 2022, they resumed contact on social media and began specific interactions, causing some of their admirers to think that the disagreements had been overcome.
Whindersson made a friendly appearance in Luísa’s documentary, shown on Netflix in 2023, in which he revealed that the decision to end the relationship was his, motivated by the couple’s estrangement and issues related to his mental health.
Recently, in several interviews, the comedian came out in public defense of his ex-wife against attacks on the networks. However, the joke released this past weekend seems to have sealed an end to the truce that existed between them. Luísa, in turn, stopped following Whindersson’s profile again, while he remains a follower of the singer.
