Directed, scripted and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki, the feature film is scheduled to premiere on Godzilla Day, on November 3, 2025.
The protagonists Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe had already been confirmed in the main roles. Now, the inclusion of a strong cast, with names like Min Tanaka, Hidetaka Yoshioka and Yuki Yamada, promises to take the narrative to new heights, building on the legacy of its critically acclaimed predecessor.
The Return of a Hit: Godzilla-0.0’s Journey After the Oscars
The figure of the monster Godzilla has shocked and captivated audiences around the world since his first appearance in 1954, consolidating himself as a Japanese cultural icon. The film “Godzilla-1.0”, released in 2023 under the direction of Takashi Yamazaki, marked the 70th anniversary of the franchise and was the 30th live-action feature film produced in Japan to address the monster. This predecessor achieved a remarkable feat, winning more than 50 awards at national and international film festivals, culminating in the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th edition of the awards ceremony – a historic milestone for Asian cinema.
In November 2024, Toho announced the production of a new Godzilla film, reaffirming Yamazaki in his triple role as director, screenwriter and visual effects artist, ensuring the continuity of the creative vision that established the previous film. The title, “Godzilla-0.0”, was officially revealed about a year later, during “Godzilla Fest 2025”, an event held at Tokyo Dome City.
Heavy cast in Godzilla-0.0: new faces and expected returns
The full cast list for the new film has finally been released, featuring a strategic mix of new talent and familiar faces reprising their roles from “Godzilla-1.0.” The arrival of Min Tanaka, a world-renowned dancer with an impactful performance in “National Treasure” (25), is one of the highlights.
- Min Tanaka: will play Murakami Kanji, a biologist tormented by great emotional trauma suffered during the war, adding a deep dramatic layer to the plot.
- Hidetaka Yoshioka: will reprise the role of Noda Kenji, who previously fought Godzilla alongside protagonist Shikishima Koichi (Kamiki) in “Godzilla-1.0”. Now, Noda Kenji faces a new threat as director of the Large-Scale Disaster Countermeasures Office.
- Yuki Yamada: will play Mizushima Shiro, a member of the crew of the ship “Shinsei Maru”, who was on the front line of the fight against Godzilla with Shikishima.
- Kuranosuke Sasaki: will bring to life Akitsu Seiji, the captain of the “Shinsei Maru”, who plays a crucial role in the fight against the monster.
- Sakura Ando: will play Sumiko Ota, Shikishima’s neighbor, who now runs the “Seisumi-en” orphanage.
- Mio Tanaka: will take on the role of Tatsuo Hotta, the former captain of the destroyer “Yukikaze”, with his military experience.
This combination promises a depth of already established characters and interactions, complemented by new perspectives.
Poster and Trailer Revelations: A Glimpse of Impending Terror
The official poster released along with the announcement of “Godzilla-0.0” carries an impactful slogan that reflects the dark tone of the production: “Sin and the punishment of humanity. There is no going back to nothing.” The image shows Godzilla roaring furiously into the sky, while dark, ominous clouds hover over a city, with countless houses being thrown into the air. This visual foreshadows unimaginable terror and an even greater level of despair than previously seen.
At the same time, the latest 30-second teaser trailer intensifies the atmosphere of tension. The preview shows Noda, a character from “Godzilla-1.0”, in a dramatic scene where Shikishima grabs him, accompanied by the ominous phrase: “This goes beyond what humans should do.” The trailer also features bombs being dropped amid the chaos, culminating with a shocking image of Godzilla emerging from the sea and approaching a seaplane, suggesting that Japan will once again be plunged into the depths of despair.
The international projection and technological innovations of Godzilla-0.0
Anticipation surrounding “Godzilla-0.0” transcends Japanese borders, gaining momentum on a global scale. In April, during CinemaCon 2026, held in Las Vegas, United States, the film had its first independent presentation as a Japanese production. At the event, director Takashi Yamazaki gave a speech revealing not only the first teaser trailer, but also crucial information about the film’s innovation.
It was announced that “Godzilla-0.0” is the first live-action Godzilla film entirely produced in Japan to be filmed in IMAX, a technological advancement that promises an immersive and visually stunning cinematic experience. This detail reinforces the production’s commitment to delivering a grand spectacle, taking advantage of the international resonance obtained by “Godzilla-1.0” and its recognition by the Academy. Expectations for new updates and the film’s arrival in cinemas around the world continue to grow.
