Sony PlayStation confirmed on Tuesday, July 9, that it will disable support for online services for the acclaimed game inFamous 2, released for PlayStation 3. The measure will have a direct impact on players looking to complete the title, as it will make it impossible to win the much-coveted platinum trophy.

The decision, attributed to “technical problems”, marks the end of an era for superhero game enthusiasts and adds a deadline for those who still want to collect all the achievements. The game, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, has long been a favorite among action-adventure fans.

The deadline for inFamous 2 online support

The company’s official statement set a clear date for the end of online support. Starting August 31, 2026, access to user-generated content (UGC) for inFamous 2 on PlayStation 3 will be completely discontinued.

This means that after this date, players will no longer be able to view, send, download or start missions created by other users through the dedicated online servers. This move reflects a trend in the gaming industry to disable services for older titles.

The impact of disabling user-generated content in the game

The UGC pillar in inFamous 2 allowed the community to expand the game experience with custom missions. This feature not only increased the longevity of the title, but was also essential for some achievements.

While the main campaign and all of inFamous 2’s offline features remain fully accessible, the inability to interact with UGC online is a blow to dedicated players. Sony explained the decision as a need to focus on new projects and optimize resources, although the direct impact is the loss of valuable features for the community.

Which inFamous 2 trophies will be affected by Sony’s change?

For trophy hunters, the news is particularly discouraging. The discontinuation of online services will make it impossible to achieve the platinum trophy, which requires all other trophies to be obtained. Some of them are directly linked to user-generated missions:

  • Level up / New level:Requires creating a new mission using the level editor.
  • Curious/Curious UGC:Requires completion of 10 user-created missions.
  • UGC Veteran/Veteran:It requires the player to complete 25 user-created missions.
  • Pioneer/Innovator:Requires the completion of 5 user-created missions, selected through the “Most Recent” filter.

Players have until the deadline to race against time and ensure these achievements are unlocked before the servers are permanently shut down.

The legacy gaming landscape and the challenges of digital preservation

The disabling of online services in older games like inFamous 2 raises important questions about digital preservation. While the offline content of many titles remains playable, the loss of online functionality can compromise the full experience and the ability to achieve 100% completion, as is the case with platinum trophies.

This is a growing reality in the industry, where companies like Sony need to balance supporting legacy titles with a focus on innovation and new releases. With each service closure, part of the interactive history of games runs the risk of being forgotten or irreparably altered, highlighting the importance of the debate on the longevity of digital content.
