Activision is conducting an investigation into issues related to modifications and player hacks in versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. The incidents have generated concern among the fan community.
Last week, the company released ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 for PS4 and PS5. Even without offering major graphical or gameplay improvements, fans celebrated the arrival of these titles on the PlayStation. However, the initial joy was briefly overshadowed by unexpected complications.
Earlier this week, modders and malicious users began compromising gameplay in the Black Ops 1 version, resulting in reports that the game had become “unplayable.” These rigged lobbies allow participants to quickly advance through the ranks, rendering the progression system meaningless. Activision acted quickly, disabling some playlists to mitigate the problem, but concern among the community persists.
YouTuber Tdawgsmitty, in an interview with one of the game’s modders, sought to clarify the situation. Apparently, the core of the problem lies in remaining vulnerabilities from the PlayStation 3 version of the title, which have not been patched.
One of the modders explained the mechanism, comparing it to the PS3 process: “Basically, you copy a save file to the USB, and there is a website that allows you to decrypt it. The website works with a jailbroken PS4/PS5, and it will do the decryption for you. The save data is identical to the PS3.” He also highlighted that the crucial flaw is the fact that Iron Galaxy and Activision did not change the encryption of files in the new port, keeping them vulnerable and allowing manipulation.
The same modder revealed that there are already individuals selling services to modify statistics and the game of other users. Fortunately, no aimbots (automatic aiming) were detected that would facilitate the elimination of opponents. Although the situation could be more serious, the ease of manipulating the game is regrettable.
Activision confirmed to YouTuber Tdawgsmitty that it is actively investigating these issues and seeking solutions. The company intends to resolve the issues, especially after the financial success of the launches. The duration for resolution, however, remains uncertain.
