The long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for this fall, moves the gaming industry with expectations of unprecedented revenue. The analysis company Newzoo released, on Thursday, July 16, 2026, a forecast that places the title as the largest consumer product launch in history, with values in the billions, exceeding hundreds of millions.

Newzoo’s projections indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6 has already accumulated approximately US$260 million in pre-sales globally, even five months before its release. This initial movement allows you to estimate how advance sales performance will translate into actual revenue during the opening week.

Detailed data from the analysis reveals a spend of US$180 million on digital pre-sales in the United States and the five largest European markets in the last week of June alone. This figure is projected for global revenue of around US$260 million in the opening week, with great potential for additional growth.

Based on these trends and plausible pre-sales curves, Newzoo estimates that Grand Theft Auto 6 is on track to generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in its first week on the market alone.

Given such huge values, one questions the real possibility of Grand Theft Auto 6 reaching such financial heights. Comparison with the history of GTA 5, one of Rockstar Games’ biggest successes, offers a panorama to evaluate this plausibility, which seems more than viable.

  • It grossed US$800 million in the first 24 hours after launch.
  • It reached the US$1 billion mark in just three days.
  • It earned US$1.15 billion in its first five days, with 16 million units sold.

Even so, imagining revenue that triples these numbers may seem unreasonable at first glance, but further analysis suggests that the scenario is not so far-fetched.

When adjusting values for inflation, the US$1.15 billion raised by GTA 5 in 2013 would be equivalent to approximately US$1.58 billion today. This data contextualizes the magnitude of previous revenue.

Another important factor is the selling price. While the base edition of GTA 5 cost $60, Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch in 2026 for $80, $10 above the industry standard of $70. This increase in unit price will significantly boost profits, minimizing the impact of inflation, as $60 in 2013 would be about $86.50 today.

Demand for the new title is a crucial element. GTA 5 is the best-selling premium game in history, with 230 million copies. There are strong indications that Grand Theft Auto 6 will generate even greater, perhaps much greater, demand upon its release, especially after 13 years of waiting for a sequel to the greatest game of all time. To put it into context, the closest game in total sales, Red Dead Redemption 2, also from Rockstar, has “only” 85 million copies sold, reinforcing the expectation that sales in the launch week of GTA 6 could, at least, double.

Therefore, as surprising as the projections may sound, both consumers and the entire entertainment industry may be underestimating the impact of Grand Theft Auto 6. The market is waiting for the next five months to confirm the estimates at the game’s launch.
