The arrival of the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch 2 promises a significant challenge for users’ storage. The Square Enix title will consume a considerable portion of the console’s internal capacity, raising questions about the need for memory expansion.

Demand for space on consoles with the arrival of Final Fantasy 14

The release of Final Fantasy 14 for the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for August 4, revealed that the game will occupy an impressive 117.2 GB of internal memory. Considering that the console has 256 GB of total storage, the game alone will require almost half of the available space. This information, released in a listing on the eShop, indicates that many players will need to provide an additional SD card to accommodate the title and other content.

Size comparison between platforms and compression technologies

Final Fantasy 14’s install size on Switch 2 is notably larger than on other platforms. On PlayStation 5, for example, the game requires approximately half the space, benefiting from advanced file compression technologies. However, it takes up a similar amount of computer storage as is expected for a large MMORPG with years of added content.

This means that players will not need extra space to enjoy all the content already released. However, Square Enix has already announced a sixth expansion, called Evercold, scheduled for release in January next year. The arrival of this new content will imply an even greater demand for storage, possibly requiring more updates and, consequently, more free space.

Square Enix’s history and the great games on the Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix already has a history of releasing storage-intensive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. Before Final Fantasy 14, the company held the record with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which takes up 91.8 GB. Furthermore, the Kingdom Hearts Collection package, which groups three games, totals 131 GB, reinforcing the trend that the producer’s major releases require considerable space on the console.

Confirmation and subscription model for players

The release date of Final Fantasy 14 for the Switch 2 was confirmed by Naoki Yoshida, game director, during the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026, held in Berlin. At the event, Yoshida also showcased the new Bastion class and a series of upcoming updates. In the first month of sale, players will have access without a subscription fee, a period aimed at stabilizing the servers. After this initial period, subscription will be mandatory to continue playing, following the standard MMORPG model.
