Flamengo intensifies negotiations for Thiago Almada and Boto is optimistic
Flamengo’s football director, José Boto, expressed confidence in the possibility of signing Thiago Almada, considered the club’s main objective for the current transfer window. In a statement made before the game against Internacional, valid for the Brazilian Championship, Boto addressed the progress of negotiations on July 29, 2026.
“He is an athlete that interests us and we are dedicating ourselves to that”, said the director to Prime Video before the clash. Boto added that “it is not a simple acquisition for several reasons, but we are committed and I am sure we will be successful.”

Boto provided information about the club’s negotiation methodology for athletes. He indicated that discussions involving Almada maintain a similar level to the previous week. Flamengo has already obtained a green light from the player himself and continues to dialogue with both the midfielder and Atlético de Madrid, seeking to define the most advantageous conditions. The financial complexity inherent to the transaction means that the club sees the slowness of the process as something natural, given the need to balance the investment with the expected return.
“People tend to imagine that this is a simple job. But it is only simple for those who don’t do it; verbalizing it is easy, implementing it is much more challenging”, said the director. He explained that the purpose of negotiations is to achieve the most favorable circumstances, and often this requires time and a lot of patience. “It is clear that both the fans and the coach are looking forward to the player’s arrival, but he will be here when it is viable”, he added, highlighting the club’s market strategy.

In addition to potential arrivals, Flamengo also monitors the situation of possible player departures. Recently, the team turned down an offer from Besiktas for defender Léo Pereira and is aware of the interest from foreign clubs in several other athletes on their squad.
“Any player is negotiable, but the decision is linked to the value offered and the possibility of finding a suitable replacement”, explained Boto. “If it is not possible to replace it, we will not make the sale. We will not sell to weaken the team, as there is no need for it. I prefer not to discuss transactions publicly, as this usually interferes negatively in the process”, he concluded.
